days ago from Apple EventMacRumors has leaked details and images of how the rumored always-on display works on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
Months of rumors pointed to an apparently always-on display that Apple kept for its premium iPhone 14 Pro series models. For the first time for Apple, little was known about the always-on display — and now, this last-minute leak gives us a glimpse at how it plays out in many more details.
report from Mac rumors (Opens in a new tab) It details how the always-on display on Pro models can work and look with the leaked images. MacRumors cites the same source that leaked it recently Your iPhone 14 Pro may be gone for good It will be replaced with a single, elongated, pill-shaped orifice. The report states that the iOS 16 lock screen will work in conjunction with the always-on screen on the phone.
At WWDC 2022, Apple announced a major overhaul of its lock screen with iOS 16. Lots of different tools and customizations for font, color, and position will be made available with the new iOS. This ties into the rumored new always-on display features that tend to UI elements that will be visible “but will fade and disappear at set intervals, unnoticeable to the user, to prevent OLED burn-in” on Pro models.
Like the Android always-on display, the leak suggests that notifications could be part of the new iPhone 14 Pro’s display. Obviously, notifications will enter from the bottom of the screen one by one and will be visible for 10 seconds. When the screen wakes up, the notifications will be animated and will appear on the screen in a stack.
That’s something we heard with the iOS 16 announcement, where Apple said notifications will come from the bottom instead of in the middle of the background. The report says that users will also be able to enable the notification counter at the bottom of the screen which will likely display unread notifications.
According to the leak, the way the always-on screen works is that the background wallpaper of the main lock screen will go dark, leaving a colorful foreground with time and “other feature edge features depending on user customization”. Most of the lock screen items will appear on the always-on screen.
Apparently, the always-on screen and the fully lit locked screen “must be configured the same way” and should have the same background, color options, fonts, and widgets. This means that they will essentially have to share the same wallpaper and the widgets chosen for the main lock screen are the ones that are likely to appear once the screen is locked. The leak continues to point out that the basic visual elements themselves can be customized.
A MacRumors source says that Apple may use iOS 16 updates to resolve issues with the always-on display once released. For now, the company is reported to be “advocating software engineers from various teams, including the Apple Watch, to finish the Always-On Display trial before launch.”
Removing the notch and replacing it with a single unified cutout, gives iPhone 14 Pro more room for status icons. It is said that Apple will change its status bar slightly. The cellular signal indicator is purported to move if it moves to the left of the slot, leaving more room for the battery icon which will also contain the battery percentage with iOS 16.
Apple tends to charge an extra $100 for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max this year and the phones are expected to see major upgrades over the base iPhone 14 model. We will know more about the iPhone 14 series in just a few days, when Apple launches the phones along with Apple Watch Series 8 And the Apple AirPods Pro 2 which is also expected to appear for the first time.
