Taco Bell will soon be making a comeback for Mexican pizza in a big way. With the fan-favorite back less than two weeks from now, the fast-food chain announced Friday that the item will be returning to menus as will the release of Mexican Pizza: The Musical starring Dolly Parton and Doja Cat.
Originally set to debut earlier this year, Taco Bell has now revealed a new September 15th release date for the musical. Featuring the aforementioned singers, the third musical act will be released on TikTok at 5 PM ET on the 15th, with additional music by singers-songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Beer. In total, 21 musicians took part in the event, which was written by Barlow, Beer, and Hannah Friedman.
“Our list is full of fan-favorites, but Mexican pizza is at the top of that list. From its flashy introduction to menus in 1985 as ‘Pizza Pizza’ to the inspiration behind creating Disreputable Jingles, Mexican pizza has a long history with the brand and I’m thrilled to give fans what they crave and bring classic Mexican pizza back home where it belongs,” former Taco Bell CEO Mark King said when announcing the item’s return.
Mexican pizza was first introduced in 1985 before being removed in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. An online petition initiated by Krish Jagirdar was one of the main driving forces for the return of the item, which returned in May of this year before the temporary items were sold out.
“Like many American Indians who grew up vegetarian, we had limited access to ‘fun’ fast food, so Taco Bell became a bridge of belonging to American culture for many kids like me who grew up in immigrant families,” the petitioner added in the release. “This made it particularly devastating when Mexican pizza was pulled from the menus in 2020, but quickly two years later I found myself on a conference call with the Taco Bell team where they shared news of the return of Mexican pizza, which clearly shows that listening to their fans is part no. It is embedded in their DNA. It is one of the many reasons why Taco Bell is more than just another fast food restaurant.”
Now, Mexican pizza will be back forever—along with its music—on September 15th.
