We are days away from the Apple Far Out event on September 7 that will likely see the launch of the iPhone 14 series, among other products such as the Apple Watch 8 and AirPods Pro 2. And this year, Apple’s flagship phones are said to have gotten one of the biggest design overhauls of the year — dropping the infamous notch.
Getting rid of the notch will come just one year after Apple reduced the notch size on the iPhone 13 by 20% over previous models. This change affected all four iPhone 13 phones, but this time around, the company’s fully retirement plan is supposed to include only the iPhone 14 Pro.
Under this scenario, the iPhone 14 will look similar to its predecessor, keeping the classic look that Apple gave its phones starting with the iPhone X. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will see the notch replaced by a hole.
As our iPhone 14 timeline shows, initial rumors suggested Round hole and grain cutouts in the center of the iPhone 14 Pro screen; The former will have the camera while the latter will take the Face ID sensors to unlock the phone. But a last minute rumor shows a different approach Apple using a single cutout Both camera sensors and Face ID. This will be an individual pill shaped design.
Assuming Apple deals with that single, inconspicuous black separation of the iPhone 14 Pro screen, that’s great news for users. Immediately, such a change means more real estate on offer.
Having the pixels between the punch-hole cutouts and the pill-shape wouldn’t be of much help, as it disrupts the screen’s flow just as the notch did. Linking the cutouts together reduces screen interruption, while opening doors to many redesign possibilities between applications. Some of these redesigns have already been hinted at in a few reports.
One of these reports suggested that Apple might be doing this to redesign the phone’s privacy indicators. according to 9to5Mac (Opens in a new tab), the privacy indicators – one for the microphone and one for the camera – can be moved to the black hole on the phone. This allows users to see if the camera or microphone is in use.
In fact, clicking a live indicator may tell users which apps are using (or have recently used) your camera and microphone, alerting you if you’re being tracked without your knowledge. This is a successful solution from a privacy standpoint.
The prolonged pill-like separation will also leave more room for apps to get additional settings or redesign the control bar. The 9to5Mac report mentions that the camera app could apparently get a redesign — the camera controls can shift and sit below the pill-shaped hole, leaving more room for camera previews.
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will likely have 6.1 and 6.7-inch screens, respectively. These sizes, combined with Apple’s beautiful display panels and this new elongated pill slot, can translate into a stunning display for professionals.
The rumors of a new look for the iPhone 14 Pro screen come at the same time that the device has been geared for an always-on display as well. iOS 16 also brings back the battery percentage icon at the top, which can be easily placed on the big screen of the iPhone 14 Pro.
That’s a lot of changes to the show, and a single chapter might be all welcome. It’s a more practical way to use up space — so much so that we wish the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max would embrace the change, too. It doesn’t seem like it’s in the cards this time around, but at least the new look is a step in the right direction for half of Apple’s new phone lineup.
