Labor Day is over, but the new movies you’ll be watching online this week feature huge summertime blockbusters and one of Disney’s latest live-action remakes. Yes, Thor: Love and Thunder took first place in this week’s roundup of the biggest movies to watch online, which debuted on Disney Plus alongside the feature-length releases of Frozen and Frozen 2.
On the same day, Disney will also launch a live-action remake of Pinocchio. Filled with big stars such as Tom Hanks, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Keegan Michael Key, this remake is the first of two new Pinocchio films to be released this year. And no, the live doll doesn’t look as scary as Guillermo Del Toro (it’s due in December).
Elsewhere in the streaming world, Netflix is debuting a pair of documentaries. The former is the story of vulnerable Australians in yacht racing, and the latter is the chilling tale of an Indian serial killer. There’s also a controversial box office success that finally hits video-on-demand and HBO Max presents an endless blockbuster starring Halle Berry.

Where Cordads sings
This summer’s most controversial box office success is now on video-on-demand. The place where the Crovad family sings, if you didn’t know, is all about a little girl named Kaia Clark (Daisy Edgar Jones), who is derisively referred to in her North Carolina community as the “Marsh Girl.” During this time, she was living alone on the North Carolina coast. Once she becomes a teenager, she quickly becomes romantically involved with two men. And then, before you know it, she’s tied up in a 1969 murder trial in which one of her lover’s is found dead. The movie, which was a huge hit, made false headlines after its release, thanks to its connections to a real murder case. She is also accused of perpetuating racist stereotypes.

Unspeakable: Race of the Century (Netflix)
Everyone loves an underdog, and – yes – there are even underdogs in the rich and royal world of professional yachting. Netflix’s Untold: The Race of the Century is a deep dive into one of the sport’s classic records as the Royal New York Yacht Club looks to extend its 132-year winning streak. And who can stop them? The crew of this documentary sat down with some of the Australian team that did the impossible. American team members are also interviewed.

The Indian Predator: Diary of a Serial Killer
Netflix knows you (or someone you know) loves documentaries about true crime — especially about serial killers. So, of course, someone asked the question, why do we limit ourselves to only English-speaking countries? The Indian Predator: Diary of a Serial Killer, which explains the horrific crimes of Raja Kolander, arrives this week to show the public that there are deeper depths of corruption than you may know. The teaser video above, which explains how he confessed earlier than you might expect, will have you excited to watch it ASAP.

Thor: Love and Thunder (Disney Plus)
In Thor: Ragnarok, we get not one Thors – but two. The story behind Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) getting the powers of her ex-boyfriend is too emotionally complex, especially for a Marvel movie. This is part of the reason why the fourth Thor movie (his second under Taika Waititi’s lead) is such a controversial movie. Undoubtedly, Love and Thunder had a high level to reach, as Thor: Ragnarok (just like the recent Avengers films in which Asgardian featured prominently) is much appreciated. Having seen it, I can say that it does not reach exactly the same heights as its predecessors. Perhaps this is due to expectations, as Ragnarok was a follower of Thor: Dark World, one of the most hated Marvel films of all time.
However, Thor: Love and Thunder hits Disney Plus this week, as part of Disney Plus Day, and I’d say this is the perfect way to watch the movie. At home, where your expectations can be properly adjusted (plus, you didn’t have to pay $18 for a ticket, or go to overcharged cinemas for perks). Here, you’ll see Thor looking for a personal renewal, going on a journey meeting him with Zeus (Russell Crowe) and fighting Gore the Good Butcher (Christian Bale), who has some good points to make.

Pinocchio (Disney Plus)
Death, taxes, and live-action Disney movie remakes are the three most reliable aspects of our lives these days, so it’s no shock to see Pinocchio without meat. Here, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth voices the titular doll turned real boy, and Tom Hanks plays his lovable father, Gepetto. You probably know the story, so I’ll turn to the cast of stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays / voices Jiminy Cricket, Cynthia Erivo is the Blue Fairy and Keegan Michael Key “honest” John. Lauren Bracco is here to play the new Sophia the Seagull.

moon fall
Once again, it’s the end of the world as we know it – and it seems like it’s already too late to stop it entirely. Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson star in Moonfall, a big-budget movie about space invasion and disaster. Yes, somehow there is a catastrophic event threatening the Earth and a secret entity that has been in our shadows for longer than we know it. It even has John Bradley, who you might remember as Samuel Tarly in Game of Thrones. Admittedly, Moonfall hasn’t had much success during his theatrical career. Maybe that’s because it’s not a Marvel movie, or it’s not a Tom Cruise movie. Either way, Moonfall has been on my “must check it out” list for a while, since it’s directed and co-written by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow).

End of the Road (Netflix)
Moving between cities isn’t much fun when you’re young. But the end of the road asks, what if you and your family witnessed a murder? Will that shake things up enough? Well, once Brenda (Queen Latifah) finds out, her two children and brother Reggie (Bridges of Chris Ludacris) are about to find out. At a random hotel near the New Mexico desert, this family is somehow targeted by a killer. Before you ask why, know that Reggie thought it was a good idea to keep a duffel bag full of money. Has no one seen no country for old men?
