The Catholic Bishop of Abakiliki, Reverend Peter Chukwu, while speaking to reporters in Abakiliki, the capital of Ebonyi State on Monday, lamented the wave of insecurity in the country ahead of the 2023 elections. He said the people of Nigeria have lost confidence in the current federal government to restore security in the country.

The bishop expressed that the constant kidnappings, killings and destruction of churches by villains across the country may have a negative impact on the country, even though they are praying for peaceful, free, fair and credible elections in 2023. He found solace in Matthew 16.
He said, “What we are praying for is peaceful, free and fair elections that will introduce leaders chosen by God to solve the problems of this country. Nigeria’s continued existence as a corporate entity is subject to a very serious question mark. I am very concerned that priests have become targets of kidnappers and murderers, but I am comforted by Christ’s saying in Matthew chapter 16 that the gate to the underworld will never prevail over the church. The church comes out stronger even when you push it against the wall.”
