HyperX Cloud Stinger 2, if nothing else, is a huge improvement over its predecessor. When I checked the original HyperX Cloud Stinger In 2016, I walked out feeling overwhelmed by the whole experience. This time, I am pleasantly surprised. The Cloud Stinger 2 looks good, fits well, and is really all you need in a $50 headset. But apart from that, it is compatible with a variety of platforms, and has a more eye-catching design than the original Cloud Stinger.
In other words: Cloud Stinger 2 may not be one of the Best gaming headphones Overall, but it’s definitely one of the best gaming headphones you can get for the price.
To be fair, Cloud Stinger 2 has some problems that you would expect on a marginal budget. The build quality feels flimsy, from its plastic body to the ill-fitting microphone. The device will not work with some newer smartphones, nor does it offer any customizable features at all. HyperX Cloud Stinger 2: Design Review
If you had to picture a $50 gaming headset with no other descriptors, you’d probably go for something like the HyperX Cloud Stinger 2. With its plain black chassis, oversized earcups, prominent HyperX logos, and red volume dial, it’s neither garish nor unassuming. It’s not the prettiest wearable headset, especially since you can’t do much about a heavy mic, but it works well enough at home.
The first thing I noticed in Cloud Stinger 2 is how crisp everything is. The chassis is all-plastic, from the headband to the ear frames, and I have to imagine that would limit the durability of the device, especially if you’re dragging it with you in a crowded backpack every day. The earflaps also spin to an almost comical degree. Just picking up the headset will cause it to roll all over.
Neither side of Cloud Stinger 2 gets much attention. On the right earbud, you’ll find a small red dial on the back. On the right side is a flexible boom microphone, with optional windshield, as well as a six-foot 3.5 mm audio cable, with an optional splitter for gaming desktops. Since the mic is not removable, it can really get in your way when you’re not using it, and it sounds incredibly silly if you’re wearing the headset on the go or travelling.
In short, Cloud Stinger 2 doesn’t look particularly beautiful or feel particularly powerful. But it has everything you need to function, and it’s not ugly. This is acceptable for the price.
HyperX Cloud Stinger 2: Convenience Review
The only thing HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 does is that it’s very comfortable to wear. It’s relatively easy to get a proper fit thanks to the plush leatherette ear cushions and highly adjustable headband. This is especially true because the headband has a series of numbered slits, which allow you to find the perfect fit every time. However, once it’s on your head, Cloud Stinger 2 can reset it if you push or pull with just a small force. Your perfect fit is not guaranteed to stay in place.
On the other hand, once I put the slits the way I like it, I found the Cloud Stinger 2 easy to wear for long periods of time, even with glasses. I never felt the device was too tight or too loose, and the earcups were breathable enough that I never felt my ears sweat.
HyperX Cloud Stinger 2: Performance Review
The most pleasant surprise with the HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 was that it looked very good, especially considering the price. The initial Cloud Stinger also retailed for $50, but had garbled and inconsistent quality for both the game’s sound and music. In contrast, the powerful 50mm Cloud Stinger 2 drivers deliver rich, clear sound for nearly every application. It’s not quite as accurate as what you’d find in a fancier headset, but it doesn’t need to be.
I tested the device mainly with Age of Empires IV, Doom Eternal, Cyberpunk 2077, and Final Fantasy XIV, and sometimes forgot I was using a $50 headset. Whether I was listening to medieval villagers setting up a stone mine, or a group of monsters advancing at my online party, the soundscape remained understandable and consistent. Cloud Stinger 2 offers an excellent balance between sound effects and background music. My only moderate complaint is that the voice acting sometimes feels unnaturally louder in comparison, but since most gaming headphones are treble heavy, this is unforgivable.
One feature of Cloud Stinger 2 is that the 3.5mm audio jack makes it compatible with legacy systems. I’m currently using something to kick the PlayStation Vita, carried the Cloud Stinger 2 with me for a few days, and listen to my PlayStation Vita on the subway while I’m gone. Final Fantasy IV’s unforgettable music sounded great, and the physical volume dial was easier than adjusting the console buttons when I was in the middle of a fierce battle.
HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 review: Features
Since the HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 is a 3.5mm headset without any USB options, there aren’t many features to speak of. There is no program. There is no wireless connection. There is no chat mix. There is no RGB lighting. There is surround sound on the PC, the headset comes with a code to install the DTS software. But you can easily use Windows Sonic – or listen in stereo.
While the microphone’s physical design leaves something to be desired, the functionality is good. In my tests, the device clearly captured my audio and reduced background noise. But they were also noticeably quieter than most headphone mics I tested. If you are talking to your friends online, they should be prepared to turn up the volume.
HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 review: Verdict
HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 is a no-frills gaming headset, and it doesn’t hide that fact. It’s not the most powerful model on the market, and what you see is what you get. You can’t customize anything about that, except for whether or not you want the mic to have windscreen — and he said the mic is a mixed bag, too.
However, Cloud Stinger 2 perfectly brings out the two most important aspects of a gaming headset: it’s comfortable, and it looks good. Not every $50 headphone can make that claim. Especially when you consider that the original Cloud Stinger was a mixed bag, this is an impressive improvement.
For the same price, it is also worth checking out a file Razer Kraken X, which has a more interesting design and weighs a little less. Similarly, if you can spend $100, a file HyperX Cloud Alpha Worth the extra money. Other than that, Cloud Stinger 2 is a solid choice for consoles, computers, or anything you can still find with a headphone jack.
