Uvalde school shooting: Texas Senator Roland Gutierrez says students are not safe going into new school year!

UVALDE, Texas (KTRK) – On Tuesday, the new school year will begin at Ovaldi after the tragic end of the 2021-2022 school year.

The video above is live 24/7 on ABC13.

Robb Elementary School has been closed and a demolition plan is underway after 21 people, including 19 students, were massacred by an 18-year-old gunman days before summer vacation.

It’s been more than three months since tragedy struck the small town. Since then, lawmakers have been pushing for change as the Ovaldi School District tries to crack down on security.

State Senator Roland Gutierrez, who represents the Ovaldi district, says not enough has been done.

“The truth is, we’re no safer in our schools than we were on May 24. And it’s not just Uvalde, it’s the whole state of Texas,” Gutierrez said. “What should we have done? The governor says it’s a mental health issue. Well, call a special session to increase funding for mental health.”

Gutierrez is among lawmakers who continue to ask Governor Greg Abbott to call a special hearing to deal with safe schools in our state.

“He has all the power to bring us back to the legislature to talk about mental health. To talk about school safety, to talk about guns, which he never wants. Greg Abbott has all that power,” Gutierrez said. . “What happened was a complete (and) absolute tragedy that this community will never erase, not even with a new school, but we need to do everything we can with more funding for victims and schools and safe schools. Everything we can to compensate them because the government failed in Ovaldi Before the 24th, and on the 24th, and everything after the 24th of May.”

For Tuesday, survivors of the Robb Elementary School tragedy will attend various schools across the Ovaldi Unified School District. The Department of Public Safety soldiers were seen training Monday ahead of the new school year on Tuesday, as they will guard schools across the region.

Gutierrez said Robb Elementary School will be demolished later in 2022. He said a new school will have to be built and he plans to request more funding for Ovaldi in the next legislative session.

With schools reopening in Ovaldi, our district’s school districts are asking people to stand in solidarity by wearing red on Tuesday.
