Houston, Texas (KTRK) – The 17-year-old, who was murdered in a home in northwestern Harris County on Monday, tried a joke on his friend who was eventually shot to death, according to court documents read aloud on Tuesday.
Reginald Smalls, 17, is charged with manslaughter in the murder of Dominic McCoy on Labor Day morning.
Officials said McCoy was visiting a home at 4,300 blocks of Stuebner Hill Drive.
A judge said during the Court of Probable Cause Tuesday afternoon that McCoy was hiding in the bathroom of the house and jumped to scare Smalls in a joking way. Smalls allegedly shot and killed his friend in response.
According to the judge, Smalls has no prior criminal record, including being a juvenile. However, she said his bond should be high.
“Based on the extremely dangerous nature of a 17-year-old’s possession of a firearm, the Court will find that significant engagement is necessary to ensure the safety of the community,” the judge said.
During the probable cause court, she set a $100,000 sum in a manslaughter case. Smalls was not present for the session. He was in the mental health unit for an unspecified reason.

In all, Smalls’ bail is $150,000, which includes a charge of assaulting a public official he’s picked up since his arrest.
Court records show that he hit and threw a detention officer to the ground who was trying to stop him from tampering with a camera inside a prison cell.
The judge ordered the 17-year-old to be under house arrest with an ankle monitor if he provided bail.
Lickedrick Bowden Jr., another friend who was present when McCoy died, was accused of tampering with evidence in the case. According to court records, he tried to hide the gun used in the crime. Bowden has already published the bonds.
