Rumors have been circulating all year about a new, cheaper version of Chromecast with Google TV. Now, there’s a leak claiming the launch of the device is “imminent” and that it will cost nearly 50 percent less than the current model, and it’s one of the best streaming devices on the market.
The site is in German WinFuture (Opens in a new tab) They repeat that some European retailers already have the new Chromecast with Google TV and will soon start selling it for 40 euros. That’s about 43 percent down from the dongle’s current €70 price tag.
In the US, the current model retails for $50, so a similar price to a cheaper Chromecast would be $29.
The lower cost reflects the fact that 1080p video will be streamed at 60Hz, instead of the current device’s 4K capability.
Reports of a cheaper Chromecast with Google TV first arrived in January, then apparently confirmed in June by FCC (Opens in a new tab) Sign up for a new Google device. Although the recording did not explicitly state that it is a Chromecast, it did reveal the streaming specifications and indicated that it would be played via a USB connection.
The low-resolution streaming player is well suited for older HDTVs (the kind you’re likely to have in a guest room or basement) and most projectors. It looks like Google wants to compete in this space against the Roku Express, which streams up to 1080p and retails for $29.99, or Amazon’s Fire TV Stick Lite.
The $30 streaming dongle is very affordable, and all three companies tend to cut prices more on Black Friday and other shopping holidays. We wouldn’t be surprised to see a cheaper Chromecast with Google TV on sale soon after its launch.
As for when that will happen, all we know from the leak is that the date is “imminent”. We’ll probably get more details next month at the Made by Google October 6 event.
