How long is CM Punk likely to be gone due to injury

CM Punk was at the center of the post-pay-per-view controversy on Sunday after making several explosive comments about Colt Cabana, Hangman Page, Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks during the post-show. A brawl occurred in his locker room involving him, Ace Steel and EVPs after he made his comments to the media, although there are conflicting stories about who started the incident. It was reported on Tuesday that Elite, Brandon Cutler, Michael Nakazawa, Christopher Daniels and Pat Buck (the last four were trying to break up the fight) were all hit with suspension but it wasn’t confirmed at the time if Punk or even Steel would stay with the company.

The Bucks, Omega, and Punk were not found in AEW Dynamite this week, and were even pulled from the opening signature. Tony Khan explained at the beginning of the episode that the four were stripped of the triples and the world championship as a result of their actions and immediately went to work on crowning new champions. Subsequently, Dave Melzer and Brian Alvarez wrote Wrestling Radio Observer Punk’s arm injury requiring surgery will keep him on the shelf for up to eight months regardless of whether or not the company decides to let him go.

“He may have already had surgery, but either way he’s having surgery,” Meltzer said. “It wasn’t confirmed to me it was a triceps tear, but I was confirmed to have surgery for a torn arm muscle, so it’s a triceps/biceps, maybe a chest muscle, but it’s probably a triceps. That’s usually the case. About an eight-month redemption period, so he will be stripped of the title either way (regardless of the fight).

“Punk is out for eight months, or whatever, six months/eight months, whatever. If he doesn’t leave him. And a lot of people don’t want him back,” he added.

The legal status resulting from the fighting is currently suspended. Meltzer noted elsewhere in the episode that he was not legally able to address Punk and The Elite directly, which is why he did not mention the four directly while addressing fans. The Death Triangle will win the Trios tournament later in the night by defeating The Best Friends, while a six-man tournament has been announced to crown the next AEW World Champion at AEW Grand Slam later this month.
