Xbox Update tests the new storage feature

Xbox is trying something new in one of the latest Xbox Insider updates with the one in the Alpha Skip-Ahead episode that can now better control where to download games, apps, and various other forms of media. This means that whenever you download something to your console, you can select different installation locations such as internal or external drives on a case-by-case basis rather than shifting everything to one place.

This feature is by no means revolutionary – it’s something PC users have always been able to do whenever they download a new game. But with games so big nowadays and more on the way this year, those with multiple storage devices that might use external hardware to move games back and forth will be happy to have this simplified storage feature.

“We have enabled a new feature that allows you to select a different default install location for games, backwards compatible games, and apps,” Microsoft said of the new storage feature for this new Xbox Insider update. Each will default to the location you selected earlier as the default install location for all content. You can also let Xbox decide where to install your games and apps. Setting the default install location to “Let Xbox select” will make Xbox try to install that type of content On the best drive available with enough space. To get started, you can access this by going to Settings > System > Storage devices > Change installation locations.”

Like other Xbox Insider updates, this new feature will first be available only to those in the program, specifically those in the Alpha Skip-Ahead test loop. After that, the feature will eventually be bundled into a larger version of Xbox when that version is ready to go live. For those who don’t have it yet, Twitter user Idle Sloth showed you a preview of what some of these options look like.

Just this week, Xbox got another live update that included two different features. Both are geared towards the social environment of the platform.

Look for this storage feature to be released to Xbox users in a future update.
