If you’re really looking to make a major breakthrough in Bluetooth audio, it might be interesting to Sony unveiling its biggest and loudest Bluetooth speaker system yet with the introduction of the SRS-XV900.
Although not officially available until October, the SRS-XV900 seems to have already set itself as one of the best Bluetooth speaker systems for large gatherings: it offers more than 24 hours of playtime from the rechargeable battery, and it can even Rivaling the giant UE Hyperboom as one of the best Bluetooth speakers we’ve seen.
Wireless connectivity to Bluetooth 5.2 works with Fast Pair for Android devices and codec support for SBC and AAC as well as Sony’s own high-quality LDAC. There is a USB port for powering and charging connected wired devices and the speaker can be controlled via capacitive touch controls at the top of the cabinet. It is compatible with Sony Music Center Party and Fiestable apps, and can also be connected and synced with up to 100 speakers making it suitable for large music installations. There is ambient light that improves the mood, too.
Karaoke enthusiasts can get the most out of their songs with a jack with a microphone and a guitar jack. There’s a dedicated 3-band equalizer, and Sony says the SRS-XV900’s omnidirectional speaker arrangement can enhance your TV’s audio via the optical digital port.
The large speaker cabinet contains a four-way omnidirectional tweeter driver arrangement with a single 12-inch forward-firing tweeter paired with 2 x 4.7-inch mid-range drivers. It also carries 2″ x 2″ woofers in the front, with other 4″ x 1.5″ woofers spread out on one side of the large cabinet, and 2 in the back. The Sony Jet Bass Booster port located at the base of the speaker cabinet promises to deliver deep, powerful bass.
Despite claiming to be Sony’s loudest speaker in X . series (Opens in a new tab)There is no information on power output in a Sony press release, except to say that the SRS-XV900 is the company’s most powerful Bluetooth speaker and the loudest in the range.
Sony big and responsible speaker
At about 35 inches long, the SRS-XV900 is much larger than any Bluetooth speaker we’ve seen so far. Unlike many of its portable X-Series siblings, the XV900 can’t really be defined as a portable speaker design – it weighs 57 pounds (about 26 kg).
Fortunately, (given the weight) it comes with a handle and has two wheels at the back of the base to allow it to be tilted and rolled into position just like a wheeled trash cart (a wheelie bin for UK readers), allowing the speaker you can easily maneuver into the position you want to deliver powerful sound .
Sony says you’ll get 25 hours of battery life to keep outdoor tunes playing all day and night, while a 10-minute charge gives you 3 hours of playtime.
It didn’t specify water resistance at this time, but previous models had an IPX4 rating that provides protection from light splashes and moisture, so it’s reasonable to imagine the new model is similarly protected.
The Sony SRS-XV900 Bluetooth Speaker System is expected to be available from October with an MSRP of around $1,199 / £999 / €1,199. Available color options will be limited to black trims only.
