Wearing black armbands, cricketers from England and South Africa observed a minute’s silence before the bell was rung once by a high-ranking member of the military at the Oval.

To the west of London, golfers from around the world paused their rounds, and pros, officials and sacks gathered on the field in front of the first Wentworth tee for a two-minute silence, as meticulously observed.

There was a touching and respectful tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on Saturday as sport resumed in Britain after a nationwide lockdown on Friday as a sign of respect for the monarch, who died aged 70 at the age of 96 on Thursday.

Professional and popular football – including the Premier League – has decided to cancel all matches this weekend to give participants a chance to mourn the Queen’s death.

International cricket and golf are back, though, as has domestic English rugby, on the back of government directives stating that there is no obligation on sporting organizations to cancel or reschedule events during the mourning period in the country.
