A try is the only Apple TV Plus show you need to binge-watch on the weekend

It’s been a solid year for Apple TV Plus with shows like Severance, Blackbird, and Physical making it an argument for being ranked in our roundup of the best streaming services. But while the wait for Ted Lasso’s third season is still winding – seriously when will this show return? Apple TV Plus offers another good feeling worth trying.

I’ve already written several articles about Trying, arguing that it’s as good as The Adventures of Coach Lasso, and the third season of the refreshing sitcom ended last week. And I’m happy to report that it’s just as good as its predecessors, combining an upbeat tone with light sense of humor and packing a cast of much-loved characters. But the show is also great at handling darker moments, allowing for more serious stories to be combined into an often carefree viewing experience.

If you’re an Apple TV Plus subscriber and haven’t yet discovered the delightful delights of this easy-to-watch show, you now have 24 episodes to catch up. That’s about 12 hours of content, which should be more than enough to get you through an entire weekend, and maybe even Monday evening as well. Are you still on the fence? Let me try again to convince you why trying is totally worth your time.

You don’t have to try so hard to like this show

The experience focuses on Nikki Newman (Esther Smith) and Jason Ross (Rafie Spall), a young couple living in London who desperately want to start a family. After striving to conceive naturally, they make the decision to adopt. This begins a whole series of trials and tribulations as they attempt to navigate the complex process of proving they can raise a tiny human – to the authorities and themselves.

The show really worked in large part because of the flawless chemistry between Smith and Spall. From the very first minute, it’s incredibly easy to buy into Nikki and Jason as a couple and as individuals. Nikki is the dreamy, wide-eyed pair for the pair, while Jason is a bit more sarcastic, with some excellent dry jokes that made me laugh a lot.

Things are mostly kept nicely, but I really appreciate trying not to be afraid to take complex topics more seriously like Nikki’s lack of professional fulfillment, or Jason’s mother experiencing personal remorse. Of course, the attempt never falters on the gray side of life, but it does present the world as nothing but sunshine and rainbows, which is appreciated even in sitcoms.

As mentioned, there are currently three seasons of trying on Apple TV Plus, and each season has a very clear narrative drive that is presented and concluded within eight episodes. I won’t spoil where Seasons 2 and 3 are going (although you might be able to guess, this isn’t a show meant to undermine your expectations), but I did enjoy the subtle ways each season differentiates itself from what came before. The attempt does not deviate from the tone of its core, but each set of episodes is distinctive enough not to feel redundant.

The attempt is a charming little show, and while it’s not quite as large at scale as some of the more ambitious Apple TV Plus projects, it’s still one of the service’s most underappreciated gems.

Don’t take my words too seriously

If the multiple articles I’ve written so far singing the praises of trying haven’t convinced you to give it a try—and if not, what should I do at this point? So perhaps the overwhelmingly positive critical reception will convince you to hit that play button.

The first season of the show debuted to very strong reviews. on me rotten tomatoes (Opens in a new tab) Season 1 has an experience rating of 86% and has been awarded a ‘New Confirmed’ badge. The Season 2 experience received a much warmer reception as it scored 100% again rotten tomatoes (Opens in a new tab). And while the Season 3 experience doesn’t have an RT critics score, it has a very solid 85% audience rating.

Apple has already confirmed it The attempt has been renewed for a fourth season (Opens in a new tab)And I’m looking forward to Nikki and Jason’s return (probably) next year. If you haven’t met them yet, there is no time like the present.
