Over the course of his wrestling career, Jerry “The King” Lawler has fought and beaten many legends, but if you ask him, his best victory is clearly a win over death. Ten years ago, the beloved and commentator’s Hall of Famer broke up during an episode of Raw. His heart stopped beating for more than twenty minutes, but the legend miraculously survived and made a full recovery. In fact, he still appears in WWE and around the independent ring.
This week marked the 10th anniversary of that crash, and the King decided to celebrate this momentous event only by Jerry Lawler: by cheerfully celebrating his victory. The commentator took to Twitter to brag about his victory and also to think that Dr. Sampson saved his life. Here is a look at his position…
10 years ago today on WWE RAW from Montreal/Quebec Canada, RandyOrton and I defeated CMPunk and HEELZiggler and then, right after that, won the match of my life, when I defeated DEATH! After my heart stopped, my heart did not beat for 22 minutes! Thanks @DocSampson13 pic.twitter.com/gkQOkbnrbZSeptember 10, 2022
The terrifying moment, which many WWE fans remember well, happened on September 10, 2012. Jerry Lawler was in Montreal at the Bell Center, which is always a great place for WWE with very loud and invested crowds. Team up with Randy Orton to defeat CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler in a tag match. After that, he’s back to normal at the commentator’s table and was working on a Kane and Daniel Bryan tag match when he collapsed and lunged backwards. The medical event that followed was not shown on TV, but you can see that something was wrong based on the audience’s reactions. Michael Cole later confirmed these concerns when he addressed viewers and said that King was receiving CPR in the back.
But he survived, was discharged from the hospital and returned home a week later. After about two months, he returned to television and eventually started doing the occasional wrestling match again as well. He’s since moved away from the full-time weekly commentary, but he still fills the spot, showing up frequently and always receiving a massive welcome from WWE fans who remember him fondly as one of the all-time great announcers.
There have been a lot of amazing duo commentators in WWE over the years. Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon were great in the early ’90s. Monsoon and Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura were both hot in the late ’80s. Pat McAfee and Michael Cole are currently amazing at Smackdown (at least when McAfee isn’t playing football matches), but for many wrestling fans, especially those who loved the so-called Attitude era of the late ’90s and early ’00s, Jerry “The Will King” Lawler and Jim Ross forever through their favorite partnership. They were just such a perfect balance. Ross could paint an incredible picture of what was going on, and Lawler was able to inject such humor.
That’s why, for those who have watched him for decades, the idea of him bragging about defeating DEATH in a social media post is not at all surprising. we saw it Rip On My Dad Bret Hart And the Andy Kaufman’s slap on David Letterman. There’s no place he was forbidden to go, and it’s refreshing to see something that hasn’t changed. Stay strong, king!
