Warning: Major spoilers gear up for HBO’s Episode 4 Dragon HouseIt is called “King of the Narrow Sea”.
Dragon House I raised the stakes even more in Episode 4, even without any epic battle sequences like last week or the main dragon scenes. Yet another time jump (though Less important than the past), Aliscent had already given birth to her second child with King Viserys, Rhaenyra was on a royal tour to find a husband before she decided to cut her off, Otto had many plans to get his grandson on the throne, Daemon returned to King’s Landing from Stepstone Complete with a tiara and a haircut and there’s only a day left before he brings chaos to the Red Keep.
A lot happened over the course of Episode 4 to prepare the way for the remainder of Season 1, and almost certainly beyond. So, let’s take a look at what happened to keep in mind as Season 1 continues, starting with the event viewers are likely to talk about for the foreseeable future.
The demon led Rhaenyra out of the castle to a brothel
As expected, “King of the Narrow Sea” Answered the scandalous question from George RR Martin’s fire and blood About what happened between Daemon, Rhaenyra, and Ser Criston Cole that leads to Daemon’s second exile. He did not take his niece to a brothel to teach her the art of seduction for use on Sir Creston, and they were not found in bed together, two sources in the book claim. Instead, after learning about Rhaenyra’s feelings about the marriage, he somewhat takes her out for some fun in town… before going to the brothel, which was to teach her that women can have sex for pleasure just as much as men. (Apparently Alicent didn’t take that lesson from Viserys.)
Things got hot and heavy between them at the brothel, causing Damon to stop before things go too far and leave her there, but not before she is recognized. Rhaenyra, apparently too hot and harassed by the brothel to only go to sleep when she returns to the Red Keep, instead lures Ser Criston into her rooms and slept with him. The damage occurred, however, when Ser Otto received word from his spies and told Viserys about Daemon and the brothel. It’s been an episode filled with so many bad decisions that have been made, and it’s Rinera who has to pay for it.
Satan decided to lie to Viserys about Rhaenyra
Daemon was dead to the world while word was getting back to Viserys about his outing with Rhaenyra, and he wasn’t much better when the Kingsguard dragged him into the throne room for Viserys to confront him. He had woken up enough to lie to Viserys and make him believe that he had indeed – as Viserys said – “defiled” Rhaenyra. but why?
Now, the easy argument is that Daemon thought Viserys would let him marry Rhaenyra if he believed Daemon had destroyed her, which would bring him one step closer to the throne. But a demon was advising Rhaenyra about judging the young ones when they were out of town, which does not indicate that his eyes were still on judgment.
He would also have come clean to help clear his name once Viserys dropped the proposal for Rhaenyra’s wedding. The demon made his life more difficult by not telling the truth, and Rhaenyra could be said too, although the damage was already done thanks to the spies. Only two people really know what happened, and Daemon and Rhaenyra both lied about it.
Rinera started playing Game of Thrones
While “King of the Narrow Sea” wasn’t exactly Rhaenyra’s most responsible episode, she ended up standing up to her father, making a concession that would be good for the kingdom as well as claiming it, and lying straight on Aliscent’s face. It can be said that she had no choice in agreeing to marry Lenore if she did not want Viserys to deprive her of the inheritance, but she did not speak a word against it. Instead, she used it to pressure her father into rejecting Otto Hightower as Hand.
She also pulled out all the stops in front of Aliscent when the Queen came to confront her about the rumours. Millie Alcock gave a stellar performance as Rainera outlasted her declaration of innocence, appealing to the Queen as “Alicinte”, “Gracek” and “your sister” while denying the “despicable accusation” that she had – in Aliscent’s words – “sexed with a demon in the pleasure house”. She even swore in memory of her mother that a demon had never touched her. While it seemed like the lady needed a lot, Aliscent believed her. Rhaenyra is officially in the game.
Prefer Smallfolk of King’s Landing Aegon
Daemon and Rhaenyra stopped on their way to the brothel to watch street performers play a play about the succession, and it was clear which candidate the people in King’s Landing were attracting. They booed the idea of Rhaenyra as queen, and cheered Aegon to become Viserys’ heir. Rhaenyra rejected the idea that their desires mattered, which Daemon opposed. She may be the heiress named Realm’s Delight and Viserys, but her path to the Iron Throne isn’t clear no matter how committed her father is to his decision. A lot may depend on who has his loyalty in the end.
Mesaria can’t be trusted
Mesaria was strongly in Team Daemon in the first two episodes, but her actions in “King of the Narrow Sea” indicate that her loyalty is now to whoever can pay the best for information. fire and blood Readers knew she was the source of information about Daemon and Rhaenyra in the brothel once the name “White Worm” was uttered, and her involvement in her scene with Daemon was confirmed. She still feels some attachment to him, but she totally betrayed him, and it’s easy to imagine that she could do the same again to anyone who decides to trust her.
Sir Harwin can be trusted
Reinera is identified by someone in a position to destroy her well before Damon takes her to the brothel, where she runs straight to Sir Harwin Strong. He recognized her, but after seeing that Daemon was with her and hearing her say “no,” he left them to their own devices and even called her “the boy” in a gesture to disguise her as a page boy. Harwin could easily have caused a stir after finding her (and Damon), but he apparently kept her secret safe. Could this be just the beginning?
Ser Criston Cole is a complication
The main player in all of the chaos who apparently had no idea about Daemon and Rhaenyra for most of the episode was Ser Criston Cole. Although he briefly tried to resist Rhaenyra and seemed to feel a pain in his conscience as he took off the Kingsguard’s white cloak, he fell into bed with her. For viewers who watched everything that happened with Daemon and his niece in the brothel, it was probably very clear that Rhaenyra was looking for someone to finish what Daemon started, and Criston was a good fit.
It looks like Creston will be more complicated than comfortable as the story goes on. Whether it’s because of Daemon/Rhaenyra or because he gets in the way of Rhaenyra’s marriage to Laenor, it looks like the princess might regret her night with the knight.
Rhaenyra and Alicent are getting closer
For a brief respite during the Narrow King of the Sea, it seemed that perhaps Rinera and Alexent could at least mend their friendship after the great damage done to Aliscent’s marriage to Viserys after secretly visiting him for half a year. They were both alone, and had a nice moment together outdoors early in the episode. Their second outdoor moment was less sweet, as Aliscent asked to see if she was sleeping with her uncle due to the Targaryens’ “strange habits”. However, it looks like they could be friends again with Otto out of the picture, assuming nothing goes wrong.
Considering that this is Game of thrones The universe (and chaos clearly coming trailer for next week), something horribly wrong will likely go wrong in the not too distant future, but they were at least on the path to reconciliation this week.
Launch Viserys Otto with more power as a kid
Otto Hightower officially became King’s Hand after the events of “King of the Narrow Sea”, after Viserys saw the truth of what Rhaenyra had said about his pursuit of his own interests over those of the kingdom. This means that Viserys will need a new hand, and Alicent may be able to make decisions on her own with her father out of power. Otto apparently underestimated Viserys’ determination not to replace Rhaenyra. King showed more backbone in ‘Narrow Sea King’ than in any episode before (although His fingers are still not working well), including sending an expert with a special tea to Rhaenyra to ensure she is not pregnant.
Find out what’s happening now that Rhaenyra has played the game after the fallout from her night with Daemon with the next new episode of Dragon House Sunday, September 18 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO, or broadcast via HBO Max subscription.
