Roku wants to be your one-stop shop for live streaming — and the latest version of its operating system makes it even more convenient.
Roku OS 11.5, coming to Roku devices in the coming months, upgrades the What to Watch feature with a platform-wide Save and Continue Watching menu. Another major addition is a new content discovery experience called The Buzz, which will have a place in the Roku home screen menu.
The company is also making updates to Roku Voice, Bluetooth listening, and live TV channel guide navigation.
These OS upgrades are announced alongside two new hardware products: the new Roku Express (2022) and the all-new Roku Wireless Bass (new subwoofer).
Explain the best features of the operating system Roku OS 11.5
‘Save List’ and ‘Continue Watching’ are probably the two most exciting improvements. The save menu is currently located within the Roku Channel and the Roku Mobile app, but will now expand across the platform on all devices. It will become a single destination for users to access the content they have saved to watch later.
As for keeping watching, it’s exactly what it sounds like – a single site where you can find shows and movies you’ve already started and resume on a selection of streaming services, including HBO Max, Netflix, Paramount Plus, and The Roku Channel.
For example, if you started watching Season 5 of Cobra Kai on Netflix and House of the Dragon Episode 4 on HBO Max, but you haven’t finished either, you can access both via Roku’s new Follow Up feature.
The functionality looks very similar to the Apple TV app (which doesn’t work with Netflix), which actually aggregates the shows you watch across multiple platforms. It’s a huge convenience – you don’t have to open each streaming app individually to resume streaming (or even remember which app has which movie you’re halfway through).
Buzz is like a Twitter or Instagram feed for posts from streaming services and entertainment brands, such as AMC Plus, Apple TV Plus, The CW, Showtime, Starz, and Vevo. These posts may contain trailers, videos, photos and interviews with celebrities. Users can like posts, save shows, or start broadcasting the title right away.
The new Content Discovery Center will be added to the Roku home screen menu, as well as the Roku Store. It is getting a visual makeover, so that users can browse, search and download free and paid channels more easily.
Other Roku OS 11.5 upgrades include:
- Bluetooth listening: The expansion will make the feature compatible with the latest Roku Ultra, Roku Streambar, and Roku Streambar Pro. Users can pair their headphones from the audio settings.
- Rocco’s voice: A new visual tool will allow users to see channel options related to their voice search, and then choose one.
- Live TV Channel Guide: New categories will make navigation easier. It includes the latest, favorite and shared content as well as genres such as news, sports and movies. In addition, a Live TV Channel guide button is added to the remote control of the mobile application.
“We are in the golden age of streaming with more great shows and movies being released than ever before, which we know can be overwhelming at times,” said Preston Smalley, Vice President of Consumer Products, Roku. “By personalizing the way our customers connect with the content they love and offering more ways to discover and access new content to stream or save for later, our users have more tools than ever to easily watch what they want.”
