boy meets world Alum Trina McGee has been open about her time on the ABC sitcom, calling out a racist “Aunt Jemima” remark from a cast member and becoming honest with the cast about disrespectful behavior during filming. Despite the feud over the years, McGee was a welcome presence when she joined the cast as Sean Hunter’s girlfriend Angela Moore during season five. While the actress played a teen on TV, in fact, she was a decade older than her teen co-stars. After more than two decades of playing Angela, the sitcom’s vet is now honest about the age difference as well as her first impression of her young co-stars.
Trina McGee opened up about first joining ABC during a chat on Bud meets the world podcast with her boy meets world colleagues. She mentioned that she auditioned three times for the role before finally reading a script with Rider Strong. At first, it seems Strong wasn’t sure the actress was a perfect fit for the role even after his first reading with her. While chatting with her former co-stars, McGee revealed that she found the Shawn Hunter actor “cute” and liked their chemistry while auditioning.
But she viewed him and the others as children because, as revealed by Danielle Fishel, the actress was 10 to 11 years older than Ryder Strong when she was cast as his love interest. Fishel wondered whether hiding her age was a conscious choice or not, leading her partner to say:
After actress Angela Moore said her peace, Ryder Strong recalled a big BTS moment related to her age. He remembers Trina hearing about an incident where a guest star was assigned to photograph his girlfriend, and it wasn’t until the table read that the cast and crew found out she was much older than him. He mentioned fear of it at the time. The BMW Alum claimed that McGee did not say anything about her age for a while after this situation. However, the topic was finally brought up after Will Friedel asked her a series of questions about her life during an informal conversation.
Coming soon chat on boy meets world The podcast turned to Trina McGee’s first impressions of the actors, with Danielle Fishel stating that most of the young actors were nothing more than self-absorbed teens. The Topanga Lawrence actress recalled that she and her co-workers worried about trivial things while McGee was married with two children (and she was pregnant with her third child when she was cast). Reflecting on the time, Trina McGee remembered her first day on the set:
It seemed difficult for the actress to connect with her new co-stars at first, but she could understand why they were a bit off. continued:
After humorously referring to the group was a bunch of “snot,” Trina McGee gave her honest thoughts about being an outsider upon joining boy meets worldChild actors on the show. She believed that fame and success at a young age had gone into their heads before she suggested her ego got involved in the embarrassing situation.
But as it turns out, that ego was actually hiding her envy, seeing her co-stars live their lives as young adults. She wanted to hang out with them after work but had more pressing responsibilities as a wife and mother. In her words:
Despite being a decade older than her classmates, she is still attached to them due to their maturity at such early ages. Too bad she couldn’t communicate with them as much while the show was running. But at least, it’s great that everyone seems to be doing better years after the show ended
