Award-winning high school ensemble keeps mariachi tradition alive!

Houston, Texas — Mariachi is more than just music. For the 25 young artists of Mariachi Los Pasajeros of Kinder HSPVA, it’s a way of life – and a tradition that transcends generations.

The mariachi experience did not begin in the classroom for most of them. Many students learned to play at home, embracing the music their parents and grandparents grew up with.

Mariachi Los Pasajeros is known for one of the best mariachi programs in the state, receiving top honors at the Texas UIL State Mariachi Festival. The group received a superior score in Section 1, the highest possible rating. They are the only group from Houston to have this honor.

The group consists of 25 musicians who play guitars, guitars, trumpets, violins, harps, and guitars. They often perform around town at places like the Houston Public Library and at local schools.

“They know it makes a difference to people,” said director Antonio Roca. “They know it really encourages part of the audience spirit.” “Every time I hear it and see the audience’s reaction and they connect with them, I am the proudest in the world.”
