Galveston golf cart crash: Council members meeting to discuss golf cart ordinance and DWI prevention!

Galveston, Texas (KTRK) – City Council members meet in Galveston Thursday morning to discuss the city’s role in preventing DWI and potential changes to the golf cart law.

The focus on a possible amendment to the law came after four people were killed in a golf cart and truck accident in Galveston on August 6.

Officials aren’t voting on these particular items Thursday, but they keep talking about what can be done when it comes to preventing DWI and what changes can be made to the golf cart ordinance.

There was some discussion about banning golf carts outright and possibly banning people from driving them at night at a meeting in August, just days after four family members, including a child, were killed when they were hit by an alleged drunk driver.

ABC13 spoke with the mother of the 4-year-old who was killed in a golf cart crash. She says something needs to be done about driving under the influence.

“It’s… you know, like a reboot… we’ll never get it back,” said Jocelyn Lara.

Just over a week after a fatal golf cart crash, a man was killed while riding a motorcycle. He was also hit by a drunk driver.

Then, in early September, a 14-year-old was killed in an accident when a man who had just gotten out of prison hours earlier – and police believe was drinking and driving – crashed into the jeep the young man was riding.

Galveston City Council has approved assistance from TxDOT in the form of a grant worth approximately $50,000 to help enforce laws against drunk and speeding drivers.

We will provide any updates on the discussion today.
