Goodnight Mommy director Matt Sobel talks about a new path to story possibilities

When it comes to offering an audience a “rework” of a beloved story, there are a number of ways in which a new image of the material can be brought to life, with the new film director good night mom Matt Sobel takes one of the most effective approaches. Rather than doing a true rehash of that basic story, he and screenwriter Kyle Warren took the concept and stuck to the overall structure, but changed the tone to focus more on the psychological and emotional themes of the film to create an experience that feels fresh and lively at the same time. a favour. the new good night mom Prime Video hits September 16th.

“When I brought this project up to me by the producers at Animal Kingdom, I initially said, ‘Good luck with it. It’s not mine. I’ll see you next time, because I’m not interested in participating in a movie remake just for people who don’t want to read the subtitles at all,” Sobel shared with ComicBook.com about the project’s development. I was in conversation with my friend, Kyle Warren, who will end up writing the movie. And we started talking about the possibility… We watched the original, we liked the original movie, but we were talking about the possibility of having a different way of paraphrasing something that isn’t more about translating material for a different language audience and more about copying the plot elements into a different genre and into a different theme. And so it was more like, for example, when Taming the Shrew Reorganized, but with the genders reversed, the original text takes on a new thematic meaning.”

He continued, “We started talking about our reinterpretation. We started calling it ‘reimagining,’ actually, thinking about themes that were important to us that might not have been in the original movie. We shouldn’t touch the original movie at all. I think the original filmmakers They’ll agree, in fact, I’m sure they will, because we’ve talked about it, there’s no need for there to be a reshoot for this movie. What it takes is a new story that honors the original by using the basic structure and plot of the original story and turning it into something new.”

While the original movie is overtly more scary with some psychological elements, it’s also more deeply disturbing. This new version, however, feels like a vague fantasy.

“So the themes that really mattered to us were, ‘we’ which means Kyle and I, the human tendency to see ourselves as heroes or victims of our lives and never see ourselves as a villain,” the director continued. “And we thought that was a substantive topic. We thought it was an interesting topic that piqued our interest in other projects we were working on and we saw a way to make plot elements good night mom It can be shaped to tell that objective story. And so I called Animal Kingdom and said, “Hey, I think I have a new idea, but it will be very different from the original idea. Let me know if you guys are into it.”

The original movie has quite a few iconic visuals, from kids in scary masks to a scene in which a bug crawls over a mother’s face, and Sobel details how he let the original movie influence his project in one direction or another.

Sobel explained, “A lot of the demarcation happened organically from this fundamental difference in ideas, and from this idea the idea of Elias as the main character arose.” From that thought arose the idea, ‘Well, we want to see the world differently because we don’t see it in this most sterile, austere, objective way, but we see it through his eyes. We want to make it look like this is the movie Elias has in mind, not this painting, we see all the characters in that cold, arm-length.

He added, “Out of that arose all sorts of ideas about cinematography and production design. But then there were also some ideas where we had to practically just talk, ‘We know this is going to be compared to the original, so let’s make a slightly different choice in that scene.'” And if you’re ever going to watch the original again, you’ll likely notice that there aren’t actually many scenes that are direct comparisons between the two. There are actually very few scenes going on in both, and we did that on purpose. “

To navigate accurately while keeping audiences guessing about the truth behind a situation, Sobel used every tool at his disposal to keep audiences guessing, from text to direction to editing to music.

“It started with the script, but it really continued even after we locked the photo because a big part of that was the music and the sound design as well. So it can happen all the time,” Sobel said. “Elias is a boy who lives in a very disturbing reality, and instead of seeing that, he chooses to see a dark fantasy instead. This dark fantasy is the movie we watch in the first 90% of the movie, and so it feels somewhat escalating. It seems stylized to Somewhat and that’s on purpose, because that’s the movie in his mind. It’s not the harsh and brutal reality, and I don’t know if you’ll notice, but there’s no manual usage in the movie to the end, and that’s because we wanted to visually support that idea that we’re in a neater, cleaner fantasy for it , where all the corners and jagged edges are flattened. And then once we’re forced out of that, it’s so brutal and rough and suddenly it’s all in the hand.”

good night mom It arrives on Prime Video on September 16th.
