Spicy chip challenge: Pearland ISD bans viral ‘Paqui One Chip Challenge’ from schools!

Pearland, Texas (KTRK) – Pearland ISD has sent an email to parents and students informing them that the “Paqui One Chip Challenge” is now banned from their schools.

Individually wrapped tortilla chips — which can be purchased widely in stores and on Amazon — are seasoned with some of the world’s hottest peppers — Carolina Reaper and Scorpion.

Both peppers are in the two highest levels of the Scoville scale at 750,000-1,500,000+ calories, According to our partners in the Houston Chronicle. By comparison, the jalapeño is at level 2500 to 10000.

According to Austin-based Paqui, the challenge is to record yourself eating the chip, figure out how long you can go without a drink, and then post the video to social media.

There are a lot of videos circulating on social media that show people eating chips, causing some participants to get sick.

After reports from other states of students getting sick and missing a class, Pearland ISD sent out an email saying that eating the chip could be dangerous for those with allergies.

Parents were asked to make sure their students did not bring the slide to school and to encourage them not to participate in the ‘potentially dangerous’ challenge.
