One of the most beloved – or at least famous – characters from the Dragon Ball franchise Akira Toriyama made a huge impression on Tokyo Game ShowShe appeared as a playable character in her next big game, Dragon Ball: The Breakers, which is set to release on October 14. The trailer also offers a first glimpse into several forms taken by the devastating force Majin Buu, but Bandai Namco has already announced its playability in the game, leaving the unnamed farmer with a shotgun to take center stage for the trailer.
The Breakers will differ from the typical very strong combat fare, which is played one-on-one in other Dragon Ball games, in which players will compete in single-player competitions for seven, with the single player taking on the role of a powerful attacker and the others, who are desperately weak, just trying to escape or overcome. Somehow attack their opponent with in-game weapons and vehicles. Survivors will be able to choose from a variety of variations of their avatar, including lower series heroes such as Tien, Bulma, and Oolong. The game will receive open beta testing on current and previous consoles and PCs from September 21 to September 24, with both Frieza and Cell available as playable attackers.
The farmer, who makes his living raising pink ostrich-like animals, makes his first appearance in Dragon Ball Z and is the first person to encounter the series’ first villain, Raditz, when he arrives to conquer Earth. Raditz scans the farmer with a face-mounted navigator, revealing his pathetic power level of five. By comparison, the trailer’s farm opponent, Buu, has a power level of between 10 billion and 560 trillion, depending on its shape.
Now, if all you know about Dragon Ball’s power levels is from the “it’s over 9,000” meme, this might not mean much to you. Simply put, strength levels are a way in which some personalities rank the general physical abilities of themselves and others. A higher strength level isn’t a guarantee of victory, given the presence of combat skills and tactics, but both the franchise’s heroes and villains have a long history of providing episodic data about each other’s strength levels to give readers and viewers an idea of how combatants are likely to fight against each other and create dramatic tension. The development team’s decision to feature characters with vastly different power levels in the new trailer paints a picture of the sense of desperation they are trying to convey to the survivors.
Although each minor character’s strength level is not revealed throughout the series, the farmer has become a celebrity in the fan community for his strength level, with the only characters he’s known to excel at are the Babies and the Turtle. He continued his unhappy adventures as a running joke throughout Dragon Ball Z, endearing it to fans similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Cabbage Man. Notably, fans have spotted him accidentally shooting Dr. Gero during a hunting trip and exploding in a tree, as well as being amazed to see The Great Saiyaman fly by.
And this isn’t the first time a farmer has appeared in Dragon Ball. In Draghon Ball Z: Kakarot, which also got a new content trailer in TGS, Raditz faced off just as he does in the anime, attacking a Saiyan with a shotgun before Raditz repels the blast with his fist. However, The Breakers will be the first time a farmer gets his due as a playable character.
