Madonna, the queen of pop, met real royalty in 2002 after she contributed a song to a James Bond movie. But when she attended the premiere, Queen Elizabeth II left her so humbled that she had some questions for the American singer.
Madonna wrote and sang the theme song for Pierce Brosnan’s latest film 007 Die Another Day. As a result, she attended the world premiere at the Royal Albert Hall, London which was held on November 18, 2002.
She was joined by the likes of Halle Berry, Rosamund Pike, John Cleese and former Bond star Sir Roger Moore.
During the ceremony, celebrities lined up to greet the Queen, who attended the glamorous event. She walked into the room to greet the A-listers, but disaster struck when she came across Madonna.
The Queen immediately inquired who Madonna was, what she had done and why she was there. The Queen of Pop fell into a fit of laughter at the almost ridiculous question.
The awkward moment between Madonna and the Queen felt like it went on forever. But it was terminated by Her Majesty’s assistant who stepped in to clear up the confusion.
The aide informed the Queen that Madonna wrote and performed Die Another Day. The king reportedly replied, “Really, right?”
Madonna shook the Queen’s hand before moving on to chat with upcoming superstar John Cleese.
However, Madonna could not have been so offended that Her Majesty asked a similar question to the Fawlty Towers star: “And what is she doing?”

This wasn’t the first time the Queen made some comedic comments about celebrities while attending a premiere.
Her Majesty made famous Marilyn Monroe in the 1950s at the London premiere. While Monroe was smiling, the Queen couldn’t help but notice something about the blonde bombshell’s appearance.
In fact, the Queen reportedly later said she “felt sorry” for the actress who would go on to star in Some Like It Hot. And it was about how she managed her makeup.
The Queen was reported to have said: “I thought Miss Monroe was a very nice person. But I felt sorry for her because she was so nervous that she scraped off all her lipstick.”
Monroe said of her meeting with the Queen: “The Queen is warm-hearted. She radiates sweetness, and I asked how much I loved living in Windsor, and I said: What?!” She said that, as I lived in Englefield Green, near Windsor, we were neighbors. So, I told her Arthur and Arthur and I went cycling in the park. “
After the fateful meeting between the Queen and Monroe, the King apparently became “obsessed” with the Hollywood star.
Reports followed that the Queen tracked down each of Monroe’s films and watched them get up to speed on the actress’ journey.
