Continue reading at your own risk… Dragon HouseEpisode 5, “We Light the Way,” begins in Vale, after a character only talked about in the series until this point. Lady Rhea Royce, President of House Royce and Referee of Runestone, is the wife Daemon despised publicly during the first few episodes. The first scene in the episode follows Rhea as she sets off on a chase, only to be met by a masked demon walking along the road. After correctly guessing that Viserys finally had enough Daemon, she realized what he could do. He deliberately frightened her horse, causing her to fall on her and break her back. A demon kills his wife while the camera cuts.

Targaryen boats sail south where Viserys will propose a marriage between Laenor Valyron and Rhaenrya. It is clearly getting worse day by day. Returning to King’s Landing, Otto confronts Alicent about her choice to believe Rhaenrya. He tells her that Rinera becoming queen will cause war throughout the kingdom, and that the only way to secure her claim will be to kill Aliscent’s children, her half-brothers. He insists that she does everything in her power to make sure Egon becomes king. After their conversation, Larys Strong found Alicent and cleverly told him about the tea the master had brought for Rhaenyra, indicating that it was indeed to prevent her from becoming pregnant.

Viserys and his party arrive at High Tide to meet Corlys about the proposal. Corlys informs him of Lady Rhea’s death, and Rhaenys says she was killed after being thrown off her horse. They are known to be skilled knights and hunters, so they suggest that something else is going on. With regard to the proposal, both parties agree that the children will take the name Philarion until one of them takes over as governor. At that time, this child’s name will be changed to Targaryen.

Raynera and Lenore agree on their marriage. They know that it is their duty to beget heirs, but neither of them is very interested in the other. Rhaenyra knows that Laenor is attracted to men, and tells him that he can continue to pursue this desire, as long as she can continue to pursue it. Rhaenys believes that Laenor will be in danger with this marriage, for the same reason that Otto is concerned about his grandchildren. The presence of the Aegon keeps Rhaenyra’s rule from being seen as legitimate by many throughout the kingdom.

Lenore and his lover Joffrey talked about the terms of the deal with Reinera. Joffrey states that Rhaenyra must also have a certain person in mind. Rhaenyra and Criston Cole have a conversation of their own, as Criston explains that he wants Rhaenyra to give up everything, because she hates the Crown items anyway. He wants her to ditch the base so they can simply be together and live a free life away from all this chaos. She tells him it’s the crown, but he clearly doesn’t want to be a secret lover.

Upon his return to King’s Landing, Alicent summons Kriston Cole to ask him about Rhaenyra and Daemon. He thinks she is talking about his meeting with Rhaenyra and confesses everything, expecting punishment. She simply lets him go. Viserys is in his chambers, looking worse than ever, his illness rotting his entire arm almost. He reflects on his legacy, wondering if years of keeping the peace and doing nothing to strengthen the family is the right way to live.

Wedding festivities begin with the arrival of guests from all over Westeros. The king is approached by Rhea’s cousin Royce, who speaks of Rhea’s death when he is interrupted by the arrival of House Velaryon. The Velaryons are followed by Daemon, a face many didn’t expect to see – including King Viserys. He started to speak but was interrupted by Queen Aliscent’s late arrival. She wears a green dress, and the beacon of the High Tower obviously turns green when the banners are called for war. It makes a massive statement and foreshadows what is to come.

Joffrey, Lenore’s lover, discovers that Sir Creston Cole is the lover that Rhinera is hiding. He conveys this information to Lenore during the ceremony. Rhea’s cousin accuses Daemon of killing her in front of the king, an exchange that eventually ends with Daemon saying that he will come to Vale to collect his inheritance from his late wife. Next, Daemon has a flirtatious conversation with Laenor’s sister, setting up another potential pair between the Targaryens and the Velaryons.

Joffrey deals with Kriston about keeping each other’s secrets, which doesn’t sit well with Kriston given how shy he is about the whole situation. While dancing, a fight breaks out on the floor. Kriston attacks Joffrey and beats him to death, leaving Lenore in disarray.

Kriston launches on his own and takes off his shield. He plans to commit suicide, holding his blade to his stomach. Aliscent stopped him. Meanwhile, Rinera and Lenore got married in a small private ceremony. The wedding ends with King Viserys collapsing to the ground.
