The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 is supposed to be up and running after Microsoft successfully launched its predecessor, the Surface Pro 8 a year ago.
We’ve already heard some promising reports about what to expect from the next big thing in the Surface Pro line, Microsoft’s flagship series of 2-in-1 Windows laptops/tablets. The latest model (pictured above) remains one of the best PCs in the world. Portable 2-in-1s you can buy, but if you read our Microsoft Surface Pro 8 review, you’ll know there are some weaknesses Microsoft can support to make this a really great 2-in-1 device.
But enough about the Surface Pro 9 upgrades we want to see — let’s talk about the upgrades we know (or are quite sure) coming in the next iteration of Microsoft’s Surface Pro series.
Microsoft Surface Pro 9 release date rumored
Microsoft hasn’t said anything meaningful yet about the existence of the Surface Pro 9. As a result, there’s no official word on a release date or even a release window.
However, some eagle correspondents (Opens in a new tab) FCC spotted deposit (Opens in a new tab) In September 2022, which revealed that a device believed to be the Surface Pro 9 has been certified under FCC guidelines. Assuming that is the case, the device could be on sale in October 2022.
Microsoft has traditionally held events to reveal its Surface devices in the fall, so if it had the Pro 9 in the works, it wouldn’t be surprising for us to see it revealed in October ahead of the Fall 2022 release.
Microsoft Surface Pro 9 Design Rumored
We haven’t heard much about anything yet about how Microsoft plans to change the design of the Surface Pro line for the Surface Pro 9, or whether it plans to do so at all.
We expect a slight change to the design of the Surface Pro 8, which features a 13-inch (2880 x 1920) 120Hz touchscreen display and an 11th-generation Intel CPU in a slim chassis that measures 11.3 x 8.2 x 0.37 inches and weighs just under 2 pounds. It also had a decent pair of webcams (5MP front/10MP rear) and some surprisingly good speakers for the tablet, although they got pretty distorted at high levels.
Hopefully Microsoft can do a little better with the next model. If the Surface Pro 9 does, it will almost certainly ship with Windows 11 preinstalled, although we’re less confident Microsoft will do the right thing and also ships a 2-in-1 with a keyboard and stylus built in.
Microsoft Surface Pro 9 reported the specifications
So far, we haven’t heard anything to suggest that the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 will be a drastic departure from the previous specs. The most important report we’ve heard about the specifications of the Surface Pro 9 is that Microsoft plans to offer an ARM version as well as a model with Intel chipsets inside.
If that proves true, it effectively signals the end of the Surface Pro X line, which features ARM-based Surface 2-in-1s powered by Qualcomm chips. Instead, Microsoft will It is said to be merged (Opens in a new tab) With the Surface Pro base line by offering the Surface Pro 9 with Intel or Qualcomm chipsets inside.
Specifically, the latest reports claim that we can expect Surface Pro 9 models to pack either Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake chips or Qualcomm’s custom Snapdragon 8cx SoC, which is said to be branded Microsoft SQ3. Such a name would make it a clear follow-up to the Microsoft SQ2 supporting the 2020 Surface Pro X.
The other big change in specifications expected as a result of this merger is the addition of the Surface Pro 9 model with 5G connectivity. This is part of what the FCC has been certifying in the above files, and it makes sense given that the primary value of the ARM-based Surface Pro computers is wireless connectivity.
If that proves true, it’s reasonable to expect such a model to be closer in size to the Microsoft Surface Pro X, which is roughly a tenth of an inch thinner than the Surface Pro 8.
Microsoft Surface Pro 9 Outlook
Microsoft is almost certainly working on the Surface Pro 9, if only because it needs to demonstrate the value of touchscreen laptops turning into tablets. Windows 11 is designed to shine on such devices, and if you don’t have a touchscreen PC or don’t like using a laptop that turns into a tablet, you don’t have much reason to upgrade from previous versions of Windows.
The Surface Pro has also gotten so good in recent years, that we gave the Surface Pro 8 four out of five stars and praised how Windows 11 makes it feel like it fits so naturally.
Given how close Microsoft got to home play the last time it stepped onto the board, we have high hopes the company will pull it out of the park if it takes a swing at the Surface Pro 9. Performance and power efficiency improvements, helping many of the best laptops The battery life keeps you productive for more than 12 hours. Packing power-flexible silicon into a thin, lightweight Windows 11 tablet is a recipe for success, especially if Microsoft uses a free stylus and keyboard.
