We need season three of Ted Lasso, although all the leaked delays mean we may have to wait until spring 2023. But the good news, at least for the players, is that Coach Lasso and a lot of AFC Richmond are coming to FIFA 23.
Yes, FIFA 23, coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X | S, PC, Stadia, PS4 and Xbox One On September 30th, Ted Lasso will present Jason Sudeikis as a selectable manager in Career Mode, so he can manage AFC Richmond, or any other team. Fans will also be able to bring another coach to Richmond – either one or one from actual football – perhaps to preview a possible sub-series where someone else takes the wheel, as season three of Ted Lasso is supposed to be the end of Ted’s arc.
Check out the trailer:
As for the rest of the team, AFC Richmond will be a playable team in the rest of the world leagues in Kick Off, online friendlies and online seasons. The featured cast members included in the press release include Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), Jimmy Tart (Phil Dunster), Sam Obisanya (Twipe Jimoh) and Dani Rojas (Christo Fernandez), while Coach Bird (Brendan Hunt) and Isaac McAdoo (Kola Bokini) were spotted in the trailer above.
There’s no word on whether Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) or Kelly Jones (Juno Temple) will make an appearance at Nelson Road, where Richmond – also in the game.
The cast is particularly excited to be in it, with Sudeikis being quoted as saying, “As a longtime fan of [FIFA]Incorporating Ted Lasso and the entire Richmond team into the latest version of the game is truly a dream come true for me and the rest of my friends. Our cast and crew are working incredibly hard on this show, and we are flattered that it resonates with so many people. We look forward to our fans having the opportunity to play with, play with, and even play against, their favorite Richmond FC characters.”
Of course, the best quote came from Brett Goldstein, who picked the moment to let Roy Kent soar, saying “It’s great to be in FIFA. I’m not sure this will help dispel the CGI rumors but it’s totally worth it.” He continued, “I’m looking forward to hitting my nephew in a match with me like Roy Kent and he’s Jimmy Tart. He’d be pissed off.” If you’ve never heard of CGI talk, there has been a conspiracy theory that Goldstein/Kent isn’t real – but it’s actually an animation of some sort.
While we don’t know if Nathan “Nate the Great” Shelley (Nick Mohammed) will be in FIFA 23, we think he’ll be an excellent unlockable character – especially if he’s set as a contender on the field.
Analysis: EA’s cunning play
Many of the TG employees, including myself, are more interested in Ted Lasso than FIFA – and they admit at Slack we’re impressed that anything has been able to get us interested in FIFA.
Could this be the trick to expand the game’s audience? Time will tell, but it’s us Believe This is a decent strategy.
