The only new app that debuted in iOS 16 is actually an old app that is now more useful to more people.
iOS 16 Fitness was previously a way for Apple Watch users to monitor their activity data on their iPhone, but with iOS 16, Apple is opening the app to everyone, without the need for a smartwatch. Now, you can track how much you move on a particular day and set goals for living a more active life but first, you need to know how to set up a Fitness app.
Getting started with Fitness on iOS 16 is very easy, only two areas need to be activated. In our guide on how to set up the Fitness app on your iPhone, we’ll tell you what information you need to introduce the app and how to make sure your activity trends are logged. We can also show you how to share your activity with others if you are looking for additional motivation to keep moving.
Follow these steps to set up the Fitness app on any iPhone with iOS 16.
1. Launch Fitness and click Continue on the welcome screen.
2. Enter in your personal details. You will be asked to provide your date of birth, gender, height and weight. Click Continue When you finish.
3. Set your daily movement goal About how many calories you want to burn per day. You can choose if you want to be light, moderate or very active. Fitness recommends a minimum for each level, but you can set your goal by clicking the addition and subtraction buttons.
4. When you set the goal you want, Click “Set Transfer Target”.
5. You will be asked Set up fitness notifications. These devices will alert you during the day to alert you if you are on track to meet your daily movement goal.
And that’s all there is to it. Your fitness is now set up and it will start recording the steps you take and the distance you travel, converting this information into calories burned during the day. Close your ring and you can start earning badges and prizes which are displayed on the homepage of the Fitness app.
Fitness does more than just count the number of steps and distance you take on a given day. It can also track your direction in four categories – your movement goal (in terms of calories per day), the distance you walk each day, your walking pace and your running pace. Fitness does this by comparing the last 90 days of activity to the previous year, starting after you log 180 days of activity.
First, however, you need to give permission to the Fitness app to do all this tracking. It’s just two clicks away.
How to let Fitness track your activity
1. Scroll down to the Trends section of the Fitness Summary screen – it’s right below the activity – and Press start.
2. On the following activity trends screen, Click OK Allows the Fitness app to monitor your progress over time.
How to share your activity with others
In addition to tracking your movement directions, you can share your transportation data with other iPhone users who have upgraded to iOS 16 and set up a Fitness app, if you feel it will motivate you to achieve your goal.
1. To share data with others, Click Share At the bottom right of the screen and then hit start on the subsequent splash screen.
2. Tap the button in the upper right corner to invite people to share activity data with. Clicking the plus button allows you to enter email addresses or select people from your contacts.
3. When you add enough people, hit send in the upper right corner.
Everyone you invite to share with will receive a notification of your invitation.
And that’s all you have to do to get started with fitness. From there, it’s just a matter of walking each day toward your activity goal and closing your ring. And if that kind of enhanced activity inspires you to try your Apple Watch, check out our guide to the best Apple Watches.
