The new Chromecast with Google TV HD streams videos at a lower resolution than its predecessor, but it’s about half the price.
Rumors have been circulating all year about a new, cheaper Chromecast with Google TV. Leaks have teased the launch of the device and the specifications. Now, Google has made it official by announcing the HD model, which will retail for $29.99. The 4K version retails for $50.
The Chromecast was rebranded with the Google TV launched in 2020 – one of the best streaming devices on the market, by the way – putting 4K at the end of its name. That would mark the biggest difference with its younger brother, which beats streaming at 1080p at 60fps.
Essentially, Google is rolling out a cheaper streaming device that’s suitable for old TVs and monitors — the kind you might have in your guest room, kids’ bedroom, or office.
Chromecast release date with Google TV HD and price
Chromecast comes with Google TV HD in one color, Snow. It will be available at all major retailers from September 22nd.
As mentioned above, Chromecast with Google TV HD will cost $29.99. The current 4K version will still be on sale for $50.
For a limited time, purchase of Chromecast with Google TV HD comes with six free months of Peacock Premium.
Chromecast with Google TV HD design
From the outside, the Chromecast with Google TV HD looks just like the 4K version – a thin, circular dongle that plugs into the HDMI port on the back of the TV. The company says that nearly half of its plastic parts are used from recycled materials.
Chromecast with Google TV HD performance and specifications
Chromecast with Google TV HD: Specifications
Size: 6.4 x 2.4 x 0.5 inch (dongle); 4.8 x 1.5 x 0.7 inches (remote)
number of channels: 10000+
Ports: HDMI, USB-C
Max video resolution: 1080p/60fps
Supported HDR Formats: HDR10, HDR10 +
Inside, the device is slightly less powerful. However, like the 4K model, this Chromecast will run Google TV, one of our favorites for clean and simple navigation.
Some performance upgrades allow for faster loading on the home screen and scrolling through tabs. It also supports HDR10, HDR10+, user profiles, and Stadia.
Chromecast with Google TV HD Remote
The Chromecast with Google TV HD also comes with the same voice remote control as the 4K model. Google Assistant accepts commands so you can easily load apps and search for shows. Say “watch House of the Dragon” and the device will find the display. You don’t even need to know what app you’re working on. The Assistant can also drag Nest Camera or Google Photos snapshots onto the screen.
Aside from the Google TV operating system, you can also cast video from your phone or tablet – no Chromecast will get rid of this functionality.
