Detroit – Tesla is recalling nearly 1.1 million vehicles in the United States because windows can pinch a person’s fingers when rolled.

Tesla says in documents published Thursday by US safety regulators that the automatic window reversal system may not react properly after an obstacle is detected.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says this is a violation of federal safety standards for power windows. Tesla says an online software update will fix the problem.

The recall covers some 2017 to 2022 Model 3 sedans and some 2020 and 2021 Model Y SUVs. Some Model S sedans and Model X SUVs from 2021 and 2022 are also included.

Tesla discovered the problem during a production test in August. Owners will be notified by letter beginning on November 15th. The company says in the documents that the vehicles in production got the update starting on September 13th.

Tesla was not aware of any warranty claims or injuries until September 16, according to the documents.
