The Marvel Cinematic Universe has built itself on acting as a living counterpart to its source in terms of content and structure. Especially with the first batch of Marvel Studios TV shows appearing on Disney+, the storytelling sequential from one project to the next has never been more straightforward. Unfortunately for Segarra, Spider-Man is not a Marvel Studios owned character. Instead, the rights to the Spider-Man movie and its stable belong entirely to Sony. Strong woman Lead Writer Jessica Gao previously confirmed that this is why they can’t use the web-slinger in the series.
“We knew instinctively that Spider-Man was outlawed,” Zhao explained in an interview with TVLine earlier this year. “We thought some of the other Spider-Man characters might be fun to introduce into our world, but we were told pretty early on that’s impossible, so we didn’t quite get out of the way. We just had a couple of Spider-Man superheroes in our room who would dare to the dream! “
“There were a lot of characters from the comics – we wanted a lot of characters from the comics for fun situations where we could bring in like a character and think of funny reasons why they’d get in legal trouble,” she added. “But there were a lot of characters that were from the comics that we either couldn’t use because of a rights issue, or there were a few times where it was because of Marvel… All they’d say was they had other plans. And that’s all they’re going to tell us. And then we tried really hard to prick, nudge, and get more information. Of course, they wouldn’t tell us. But I’ll say, the only MCU character who’s bothered a lot of writers in our room that we couldn’t use is Spider-Man and anyone involved in the neighborhood— Like the world of Spider-Man. Because we have a lot of Spider-Man fans in the room.”
