The story is inspired by the urban legend “The Watcher” whose story appeared in November 2018 thanks to an article by Reeves Wiedeman for shearing. This article tells the tale of homeowners in Westfield, NJ where, almost immediately after the home was purchased, they began receiving frightening and threatening messages, all of whom had signed The Watcher. Eventually, the letters became increasingly bizarre that the owners were so terrified that they never moved in and rented them instead. They finally sold the house in 2019 at a huge loss.
