Back to the plot hole in the future: why Marty McFly dave should be named after back in 1985 | movies | entertainment

Back in the Future, which airs on ITV2 this evening, saw Michael J. Fox star as Marty McFly. George and Lauren’s teenage son in 1985 is actually their third child after Dave and Linda. The now-popular fan theory points to a loophole in Marty’s plot that Dave isn’t named in the new and better timeline of 1985 he’s back in at the end of Back to the Future, thanks to his intervention in 1955.

Reddit user 34erf argued: “In Back to the Future, we see Marty’s actions affect future events, like telling Goldie Wilson he’s going to be mayor and playing Jonny B Goode. When he says goodbye to his parents, he says if you had kids one day and someone fired Fire on the carpet. His parents laugh and his mother says she likes the name Marty. In the future, Marty came from and he has an older brother named Dave.”

They added, “In the original timeline, Marty’s name was not specifically mentioned where he came from, so it can be assumed that they just chose him. In the new future, there is now inspiration from someone for that name. Thus, they are more likely to name their first son.” [Marty], who will be born the closest when their memories of Marty are still alive and they chose the name Dave for their second son. Ergo Marty McFly should now be Dave McFly.”

Another fan added, “It’s a good theory, but easily explained because the parents liked the name David better. Honestly, it’s been thirty years, and they’ve only seen Marty for at least a week or so. It would be hard to remember a lot of things about him. Nor The parents even say Marty got them together, but that credit goes to Biff.”
