Apple’s 2023 product catalog could contain some brand-new devices like the 15-inch MacBook Air and Apple VR/AR headsets along with plenty of typical product updates, according to Mark Gorman in his latest release. Power On Newsletter (Opens in a new tab).
We’ve heard rumors of a bigger MacBook Air M2 before. This would be a departure from previous MacBook Airs, which were only available in 13-inch or 11-inch variants, but it will offer users a larger MacBook while taking advantage of the mid-level MacBook Air’s feature set and price. Currently, the only MacBook with a larger screen is the 16-inch MacBook Pro, which starts at $2,500; Very favorable price for “professionals”.
Gurman previously claimed that while there is no M2 version of the 24-inch iMac, there will be an M3 chip ready for next year. The current 2021 iMac comes with the Apple M1 chip, which while still powerful and efficient is nearing its second year, so it can be said that it is due to the update.
For users looking for more Mac power, Gurman mentions the iMac Pro 2023 as well, which tends to offer a larger screen and a Pro or Max chip for added performance. For even greater capabilities, you can look to the new Mac Pro desktop tilting tower, which is currently the only remaining Mac that has yet to receive M-series chip processing, and is likely due and an update.
On the tablet front, we can apparently expect a new 14.1-inch iPad. In the past, a new iPad Pro was likely to be larger, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, rather than an entirely new iPad type.
Gurman also mentions the HomePod 2; This would be a sequel to the disappointing original HomePod. We’ve only had the HomePod mini in terms of Apple smart speakers for the past couple of years, so it’ll be interesting to see if Apple can get things right on a full-size smart speaker the second time around.
Also in the home category, Gurman reiterates an earlier claim about what looks like an Apple smart hub arriving by the end of 2023. An alleged combination of Apple TV, HomePod, and a FaceTime camera, this could help Apple compete against products like the Google Nest Hub or Amazon Echo Show 10 (Currently the best Smart Display out there) which a HomePod without a screen can’t match.
Finally, we come to Reality Pro, which is what Gurman thinks of as the Apple VR/AR headset. Apple has been rumored to be working on virtual/augmented reality hardware for some time, but nothing conclusive has been said yet.
From what the rumors are saying, this headset will be very expensive and geared towards professionals. Regular users will be better off waiting to see if Apple glasses, a low-powered AR device, are rumored to appear next.
That’s every several months into the future at least. Thankfully, however, we’ll still have to see some other Apple products arrive in the next few weeks.
The updated iPad Pro 2022 and MacBook Pros are both possibilities to drop the company’s latest product this year, although they may not get an event of their own like the iPhone 14, Apple Watch 8, Apple Watch Ultra and AirPods Pro 2.
