Houston crime data: 35% of homicides are domestic violence related, Harris County Sheriff’s Office says!

Harris County, Texas (KTRK) – Sheriff Ed Gonzalez spoke to reporters outside a murder scene Thursday about the worsening domestic violence problem in Harris County after a woman was shot dead with her baby in her arms.

“There’s been a couple living here who have had domestic violence issues for some time now,” Gonzalez said.

This is unfortunately nothing new for Gonzalez, who said domestic violence cases make up the bulk of homicides in Harris County.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the latest numbers count 106 homicides in the county so far this year, with 35% of those cases related to domestic violence. This does not include Houston Police Department cases.

Representatives are investigating two domestic violence-related murders in the span of two days this week.

Greg Hightower, a military recruit, is accused of killing his wife while she was being questioned by the Naval Criminal Investigative Services about a report she filed against him for abuse.

The next day, Friday, a standoff with SWAT in northwest Harris County ended with the murder of a man and his stepmother’s stepfather before aiming the gun at himself. According to the deputies, the fatal shooting began with the mother calling 911, saying that her 28-year-old brother-in-law was armed and assaulted her daughter.

“Domestic violence is a horrific situation to be aware of. There are great resources like Houston area women’s center and 24-hour hotline“If you find yourself in an abusive situation, start coordinating an exit plan,” Gonzalez said. “These situations can turn violent.”
