Walt Disney World announces closure before Hurricane Ian arrives

Before Hurricane Ian made landfall later this week, Walt Disney World announced various closures at its Orlando campus. While all Disney World theme parks are currently scheduled to operate “under normal circumstances,” park officials announced Monday that many resorts and water parks will be temporarily closed. So far, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, Winter Summerland Miniature Golf, and Fantasia Gardens Miniature Golf are closed Wednesday, September 28 and Thursday, September 29.

A few resorts have also closed, including Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, Copper Creek Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, Treehouse Villas at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, and Bungalows at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Companies at Disney Springs are also operating as usual.

“The Walt Disney World Resort is currently operating under normal conditions as we prepare to make the necessary adjustments based on the latest information from the National Weather Service,” Disney’s weather tracking website is reading. “We continue to put the safety of our cast members first and will share updates with you as we monitor Hurricane Ian. Orlando officials are preparing for a direct hit from the storm, similar to Hurricane Charlie in 2004.”

Dyer said Monday (via Orlando Sentinel). “This is really the height of hurricane season, so prepare for this season and you’ll be prepared for the rest of the season.”

As of this writing, Hurricane Ian was traveling through the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 2 storm.

Outside of the coronavirus pandemic, the last Disney World shutdown came in 2019 due to Hurricane Dorian. At the time, Disney World closed its doors for the afternoon before the storm turned, allowing the resort to reopen the next day. Prior to that, Disney World was closed for three days in 2017 due to Category 5 Hurricane Irma.
