Dragon Ball debuts special cover art from Naruto artist

Dragon Ball has earned its place as one of the best anime franchises over the past 40 years. Creator Akira Toriyama could not have imagined how massive this series is, but Goku and Vegeta are known all over the world now. To celebrate the manga’s 40th anniversary, Dragon Ball has started a campaign asking other popular manga to sign new manga covers. And now, the artist behind Boruto: Naruto Next Generations shares his opinion on the series.

As you can see below, the artwork was released on the official Dragon Ball website recently. It turns out that Mikio Ikemoto was asked to join this anniversary campaign, and they picked out a special piece of cover art to adapt it. After all, their seventh volume essay has been released, and it shows Goku and Bulma on a road trip with each other.

The two covers have some distinct differences between them, but in the end, the most obvious changes are due to Ikimoto’s personal art style. Both Bulma and Goku have softer character designs, the latter being shaded quite differently from the way Toriyama did. From his calligraphy to his color palette, Ikemoto’s style is very different from Toriyama, but his manga transformation works nonetheless.

Of course, Ikimoto isn’t the only artist to crack Dragon Ball on its anniversary. So far, Assassination Classroom Yossi Matsui has joined the event along with Mitsubishi Shimabukuro, Hiroshi Shiibashi, Tatsuya Endo, Kenta Shinohara, Koyoharu Gotouge, Tattsuki Fujimoto, Ryuhei Tamura, Tite Kubo, Masashi Kishimoto and more. New covers will be released monthly until November 2024, so fans can look forward to more acclaim in the future.
