New Steam Deck competitor announced by Razer, Verizon

A Steam Deck competitor is entering the market with Razer, Verizon, and Qualcomm this week announcing the Razer Edge 5G, a device meant for playing games on-premises or over cloud technologies. So far only a preliminary tease for this device has been shown with some limited details. The companies behind the new device have promised a more in-depth reveal that will happen in a few weeks during Razer’s upcoming big RazerCon event.

A first look at this device can be seen below courtesy of George Coronius Verizon who shared a video that only provided brief glimpses of the devices involved. Some additional details on the Verizon news site call this “the world’s first 5G Gaming Handheld” and confirm that it uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 chipset, for those interested in the technology powering this device.

As evidenced by the fact that it is included in the name, the 5G aspect of this device is supposed to be one of its big selling points.

“This Android portable gaming device will give you access to the games you love, whether downloaded to play locally, streamed from your console or accessed directly from the cloud – via 5G Ultra Wideband,” Verizon tease He said.

For those who have remained familiar with the various handhelds released in response to mainstream options like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, you might remember that the Logitech G Cloud Gaming Handheld was revealed before that. This device, by comparison, requires a Wi-Fi connection while not offering 5G support.

We know the Logitech device will retail for $349.99, but we don’t yet know how much the Razer Edge 5G will cost. Steam Deck starts at $399 and goes up from there depending on storage specs and add-ons, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Razer device coming in somewhere around this price point given that it hopes to be competitive and offer native offerings and cloud-based gaming options.

It’s also worth noting that the end of the video above features the Xbox logo which indicates that this device will support Xbox Game Pass games as well. We hope to learn more about that and other features on October 15th during the RazerCon event.
