The critically acclaimed Rockstar San Diego adventure game, Red Dead Redemption, tells the brutal tragic love story of John and Abigail Marston. John, a former gun-toting outlaw recruited as a child, now has to deal with the government’s kidnapping of his wife and son. Abigail Roberts was orphaned as a child and became a sex worker, eventually falling in love and marrying John despite his past gang ties.
John and Abigail Marston made this list because of how developers synthesized these elementary and relatable real-life relationship problems, albeit during the turn of the 20th century. John struggles to accept that he’s a father, and Abigail fears that her husband’s involvement with the Van der Linde gang will land him in an early grave. They are constantly arguing about it.
9/10 Sonic the Hedgehog and Amy Rose
Sonic the Hedgehog doesn’t need an introduction at this point in his journey, but he also has a very special person to thank for getting him out of prison back in 2001. Step into Amy Rose, Sonic’s pink-haired or death-matching, self-proclaimed girlfriend, done Introduced for the first time in the bestselling Sega CD game, Sonic CD.
Sometimes Amy finds herself getting caught by {INSERT SONIC BADDIE HERE}, but more often than not, she’s right on Sonic’s side, helping him and sometimes saving him on adventures. She also uses a giant pink mallet as a fighting weapon to hammer her enemies into a good dough.
8/10 Commander Shepherd and Garros Vakarian
Garrus Vakarian, a Turian from the Mass Effect series, is a beloved character for many fans of the insanely popular Bioware games. Garrus is a former C-Sec officer in the castle who eventually joins you, Commander Shepherd, on your mission to save the galaxy. Through expertly written dialogue and story-driven missions of loyalty, Garrus finds an impatient but kind-hearted fellow, perhaps suffering from some form of depression but always ready to help you at any moment.
If you choose to start the Garrus romance option in the game, you’ll discover that Taurian sees himself alone in the universe after spending much of his life trying to do good and dealing with the bureaucracy in the castle. In Mass Effect 2, Garrus learns that you are perished, he transforms into a full-blown Hawkeye after a snap and becomes a Vigilante Justice Army in Turkey that takes down gangs under the name “Archangel”. Garrus is going through intense emotional grief over your loss to the Normandy to the Reapers. He blames himself, and his immediate reaction to watching you die is to go solo on a suicide mission, trying to do good in his own way. Garrus Vakarian is a masterpiece in video game character development.
7/10 Liu Kang and Kitana
The Mortal Kombat series, not usually known for its timeless love stories, is home to one of the most famous video game couples in history. Liu Kang and Kitana took the phrase “until death do us part” and add subparagraphs to it.
At one point in the Mortal Kombat lore changing the timeline and dimension-jumping, Liu Kang and Kitana were killed and revived as evil and far more powerful than the zombie versions known as the Revenants. Even so, the gruesome duo that rallies the ribcage raise their taxes together.
6/10 Eli and Riley
The Last of Us games really don’t deliver any punches when it comes to tales of love and heartbreaking loss. While there are other relationships in the lore series, the love that never was is the game’s saddest side story. Firefly’s ambitious 16-year-old Riley Abell was Eli’s first love interest who was killed off shortly after their relationship began. The short-lived romantic connection between Riley and Ellie began the same way any normal person would, without a post-apocalyptic background. Both are orphaned during an outbreak, and become close friends after Riley protects Ellie from a gang of bullies in a quarantine zone.
At the age of 16, Riley was fascinated by a group called the Fireflies and wanted to leave the quarantine area and Eli to join them. At that moment when Riley turned to leave to join the fireflies, Eli stood in her way and forced Riley to stay with a kiss. Tragedy occurred shortly thereafter when both Ellie and Riley were bitten by the injured. Riley, unfortunately, succumbed to a brain infection and died as a result.
5/10 Geralt Winnifer
Literally bound by fate in a last-ditch attempt to defeat a powerful enemy, Geralt and Yennefer are the most likely couple on this list because they aren’t always the most loyal to each other. In fact, both Geralt and Yennefer have recorded acts of infidelity in their pasts which are often the subjects of an argument or outright breakup between the two.
However, Geralt and Yennefer make this list probably because their existence for nearly 100 years proves that enough time can heal even the deepest wounds.
4/10 Master Chef and Cortana
Not all couples see eye to eye. Sometimes you’re a genetically enhanced super soldier destined to save humanity no matter the cost, and sometimes an AI is very bent on intergalactic domination. Master Chief and Cortana have become synonymous with the Halo series, adding a bit of a false love story of man and machine to the space-drama shooter.
But, Halo Lore fans will tell you that Chief and Cortana’s relationship is a bit more complicated, as Cortana is a product of Dr. Kathryn Halsey’s mind cloning. Jon more or less views Dr. Halsey as a kind of fatherly figure as well as his mentor, which makes his feelings for Cortana all the more understandable.
3/10 Mario and Princess Peach
The story of a brave plumber from Brooklyn who rescued Princess Toadstool from the clutches of an evil ‘cracked turtle’ with obvious border issues is frankly as old as video games.
Celebrity couple Mario and Princess Beach of Nintendo created the 1985 NES Classic, an allegory about what you want to do, be the hero and defeat King Koopa, er Bowser. Mario and Princess Peach might also be the most consistent video game poster couple ever.
2/10 Link and Zelda
Get ready and get your copy of The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia because this relationship is complicated first and foremost. Link and Zelda from Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series are, in many ways, platonic friends and even partners in some of the adventures in the franchise.
While Link and Zelda were technically in relationships on certain timelines, similar to the Minish Cap, as Ganon’s slaying, the energy-saving dimension – the pair is more interesting than Forest-boy-save-the-princess-from-the -baddie.
1/10 Walkthrough and Mono
Shadow of The Colossus by Team Ico challenges the idea of trading your soul for the one you love. At the beginning of the story, Mono is sacrificed by her tribe, grief-stricken, and Ender takes her body to the Temple of Dormen in the Forbidden Lands. When Wonder places Mono on the altar in the temple, a voice commands him.
Dormin, who is only heard by Wonder in the temple, orders him to kill the sixteen giants, known as Giant, who roam the forbidden lands. Not much is known about the Wander, but as you begin to take down the Colossi, your appearance begins to deteriorate, and the ancient sword you use grows stronger.
It was later revealed that Dormen was an evil entity that had been exiled to the Forbidden Lands, and his energy was locked inside each statue. Colossi, in turn, protected the forbidden lands from anyone’s access to the temple and deceived him with the voice of Dormin. Wonder wanted so badly to bring Mono back from the dead that, blinded by great sadness, he trusted words of pure deception if it meant he could only have one moment with her.
