October climate outlook: This month’s weather in Houston to bring low temperatures, declining sunshine, warmer, drier conditions!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – October is here, and it usually brings with it a lot of weather changes.

Historically, this month brings Houston’s first fall day with a high in the 1960s and the first morning with a low in the 1940s. It is also the second wettest month of the year after June, which put an end to the hurricane season in Texas.

Early October often feels like summer, with high temperatures in the 90s, but by the end of the month, the average high drops into the upper 70s.

Likewise, the lows at the beginning of October are still in the 70s, but the average end of the month is in the mid-50s! The decrease in the brightness of the sun is a big reason for the cooler temperatures observed throughout the month.

At the beginning of October, Houston receives just under 12 hours of daylight, but by the end of the month, daylight has dropped to just 11 hours.

As fall fronts merge with the remnants of moist Gulf air from summer, the result is often heavy rain.

So what do we expect in October?

The prevailing weather pattern is expected to bring warmer, drier conditions than usual October in Houston, increasing the chance of droughts returning and intensifying as the month goes on. No matter what the weather brings, we expect there will be plenty of candy by the end of the month!
