Was Vince McMahon planning to crown Cody Rhodes as WWE Champion?

When Cody Rhodes returned to WWE back in April, he quickly made it clear that his only goal was to eventually win the WWE Championship. The implications of this claim meant that “The American Nightmare” would eventually have to get close to current undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, but Rhodes spent his first months in the company taking three pay-per-view wins over Seth Rollins. Unfortunately, he also suffered a chest tear and has been off the field since his valiant victory over Rollins inside Hell in a Cell. There were a lot of fan theories at the time suggesting the idea of Rhodes coming back in Royal rumble Next January, he won the Reigns title.

However, it does not appear that Vince McMahon had the same vision in mind. According to a new report from Fightful Select Monday, McMahon has not “consolidated” any plans to make Rhodes a world champion.

“Instead, we were told that Vince McMahon was ‘all on board’ under Roman Reigns’ double reign, and there were no ideas from Vince that he was ready to move on from that summer,” Sean Ross Sapp wrote.

Obviously a lot has changed since then. McMahon left the company in July in the wake of several scandalous reports from the Wall Street Journal, and Paul “Triple H” Levesque became fully responsible for booking WWE as the company’s director of content. There have been reports recently of WWE wanting to have two separate world champions headed back into next year’s WrestleMania season, but it appears that they are battling for at least one title from Reigns without suffering any kind of loss. It is highly rumored that Reigns will be in a match at WrestleMania 39 against Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
