Last year, Hasan Minhaj, the former Daily Show reporter who became the host of Patriot Act on Netflix, was on the road with his backup tour The King’s Jester. I’ve been a fan of the comedian since his last encounter with The Homecoming King. When I entered the theater I wasn’t ready for what I was about to see. Platform Show is a tight, well-rehearsed, two-hour serious comedy that will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Fortunately, you’ll all be watching The King’s Jester soon on Netflix, and I don’t just think it’ll impress anyone who watches it, I think it’ll join the ranks of the funniest stand-up specials on the streaming device.
From telling stories about his family and reflecting on the struggles of fame and ego, Minhaj throws no punches and leaves everyone laughing and thinking throughout his show. Diving into stories about his Netflix show The Patriot Act, he manages to bring the audience on a complex and ironic journey during the last few years of his life. Here are three reasons I think you should be excited to watch The King’s Jester.
Hassan Minhaj, a masterful storyteller
That was true of the Homecoming King, but when I saw The King’s Jester, I quickly realized how amazing Minhaj was at creating a world and characters that weave it all together into a true, funny, and wonderful story.
For example, my favorite story he told was about the Patriot Act being defamed after he did an episode that exposed hedge funds and private equity firms. He took us through the entire experience, describing the moments in great detail. Without giving away a lot of money, Minhaj managed to tell an intense and complex story about discrediting the whole thing, and it kept the audience engrossed and popping the whole time. It takes a seriously talented person to tell an informative and entertaining story on a complex and usually confusing topic.
We get some stories about his time making the Patriot Act on Netflix
Minhaj used to host the popular Netflix series Patriot Act and when it was canceled, fans were excited to express their disapproval of Netflix’s decision. This cancellation was controversial and ambiguous. Minhaj was not afraid to speak out his views on his show, whatever the possible consequences. This led him to some precarious situations, for example, the Saudi government wanted the broadcaster to remove an episode of the Patriot Act.
In The King’s Jester, Minhaj gets into it all. From the show’s cancellation to the honestly horrific situations it ended up with, he also explains the alluring reason why the show was called the Patriot Act. It really doesn’t hold back, and it’s fun to take an inside look at the popular and sometimes controversial Netflix series.
King’s Jester is sarcastic but also incredibly honest
While this show is clearly sarcastic and hits all the funky tunes, it’s also incredibly honest. He uses his comedic timing and political wit to introduce a topic and our entry into it. Then he takes the story to a sincere and earnest place to make a vital point.
For example, he tells a story about a hate crime he is exposed to. As a Muslim America, the discrimination he has faced is severe and frightening. He tells this hate crime story in a funny way, but once you realize what he’s talking about the truth of the situation, you are left to think about everything he said and the intricacies of the situation he just described. He also does so with stories about social media, his egos, his family, and more. It is funny and deep.
You’ve mastered the art of improvisational comedy, and The Clown King is a prime example of that. I highly recommend reviewing it; It’s one of the best standing routines I’ve seen in person. You can watch Hasan Minhaj’s The Amazing Special with a Netflix subscription on October 4, as part of the October releases on Netflix.
