The Royalton at River Oaks: City of Houston allowing residents to move into some units after structural damage evacuation!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Nearly two months after residents evacuated a known high-rise in Houston due to potential structural problems, the city of Houston has allowed some of them to return to their units.

A Houston spokesperson shared with ABC13 that residents of The Royalton in River Oaks were allowed to return on Tuesday. However, a dual fire monitoring system is in place for safety measures, with some units still undergoing extensive repairs and closed to residents.

The video above is from a previous report.

Residents have been kept away from the building since August 12, after the concrete on the first floor dissolved.

Video obtained by ABC13 shows residents fleeing in ankle-deep water through the lobby. At the time, some residents said water was flowing through the elevator corridors.

This has left many residents unsure of when they will return home.

On Tuesday, the city informed ABC13 that engineers are working on plans to repair the foundations and fire lines. Plumbing permit purchased. Now, the Houston Licensing Center is waiting for an asbestos report before issuing a repair permit.
