Netflix definitely loves period dramas, and the latest drama to arrive on the service seems to be doing well with audiences. The Empress, which entered the Netflix catalog last week, has been climbing into the top 10 of the charts and currently at number two – only overtaken by the controversial and still-dominant Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
Set in the 19th century, the German-made series follows Elisabeth “Sisi” von Wittelsbach, a 16-year-old Bavarian duchess who falls in love with Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph. The fact that Franz is supposed to marry Helen to Sisi’s older sister does not prevent the couple from marrying – making Sisi the honorary empress.
As expected, the six-episode series features a lot of political maneuvering, as Sisi has to deal with the fact that her new parents are constantly plotting to bolster their position; Game of Thrones but without the dragons. There is violence and sex, in case anyone is wondering, keep that in mind.
In addition to sitting at the top of the Netflix charts, The Empress is proving itself through other channels. The review declares: “When it comes down to it, the series not only highlights modern themes, but The Empress does what only the best movies and TV series can do – transporting you in another time and place. “.
Unfortunately, as worldwide (Opens in a new tab) He notes, there’s one thing about The Empress that viewers globally seem unhappy with. Such is the fact that there are only six episodes in the first season, and Netflix being Netflix, fans will likely have to wait a while for new episodes to arrive.
But hey, like The Crow, this show is based on real-world history and means discerning fans can see what might happen next if they really want to. Which will come in handy if Netflix cancels the show prematurely.
The show is also in German, and Netflix doesn’t always have the best track record when it comes to subtitles or dubbing. The Squid Game came under fire for poor dubbing Post-launch, and anyone who’s seen Lupine in English will undoubtedly agree that the quality isn’t great. Fortunately, the Empress has not received the same criticism yet.
So if you’re looking for something new to watch, and like the idea of a historical drama, the Empress should find herself right at home on your watch list.
