Yeesh, Google Pixel Watch appears to have some seriously chunky bezels on the watch’s round face, judging by some photos posted by WinFuture’s Roland Quandt (Opens in a new tab) on Twitter.
Through many quick official and casual looks at Google’s upcoming smartwatch, the narrative around the edges of the Pixel Watch’s display had plenty of twists and turns. One ad apparently from Google itself indicated that the bezels are thinner than we initially thought and that the display occupies more of the rounded watch face than initially meets the eye.
But then other leaked photos of early case openings showed the watch’s edges to be somewhat chunky.
Now images of the Quandt, apparently taken from leaked marketing materials ahead of the Google October event on October 6, are knocking home where the Pixel Watch will have almost comical bezels and much less screen space to click.
Now it appears that Google Wear OS’s rounded look and design gives the Pixel Watch the illusion of having a larger screen, or at least masking the thicker bezels. And in my view, these still make for a rather attractive smartwatch, although they probably don’t hold the promise of a computer on the wrist of the Apple Watch 8 or Apple Watch Ultra.
And while all kinds of devices use clever engineering and display technology to keep bezels to a minimum, allowing more screen space in compact hardware packages, Google seems to be swimming in the other direction compared to the others; Especially the Apple Watch Series 7 brought a design that pushed its screen significantly closer to the edges of the watch face.
Having said that, the likes of the excellent Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 still have noticeable edges on their faces. So it seems that there is still a challenge in making a round smartwatch that does not compromise on the relative display size.
We have to put the Pixel Watch through its paces and see if the decision to get large bezels was a mistake or if it simply became unnoticeable due to the Wear OS experience.
