Legendary Queen’s composer Mike Moran once admitted the star: “Very few people can sing like Freddie Mercury. He’s one of the most memorable artists I’ve ever had the chance to work with. Freddy is an amazing singer and he has a phenomenal range. I have great control over his voice, great crafting” .
One time in particular when Moran was so impressed with Freddy’s singing talent was when he teamed up with Montserrat Caballe, who passed away today 4 years ago. The song, of course, was a smash hit Pobeira Crossover Barcelona back in 1987.
The composer said on the documentary series Finding Freddie, “I don’t think Fred sang better at any other time in his life. Fred practically never tried to sing, but Fred was a great performer. However, the stunning duo could have ended up as a “complete disaster”, with the Queen singer having serious doubts that it would work.

The singers had dinner together at Freddie’s Garden Lodge home in Kensington and after the meal they spent time around the piano together singing through different genres.
On the occasion Moran said, “We didn’t need to lighten the atmosphere at all. They were like old friends after about 10 minutes and that was it. It was very well received, and everyone was very surprised. No one had any idea about Anything like this ever happened.”
After the meeting, the opera singer asked if Freddie could write something that they could perform together. So Queen Frontman and Moran hit the studio and come to Barcelona.
Although the composer revealed that their two very different voices and ranges proved to be quite a challenge.

“It was not an easy process,” Moran admitted. But in the end, Barcelona was a hit and Freddy collaborated again with Montserrat the following year with the single The Golden Boy, along with an entire album together.
After Freddy’s death in 1991, the song reached number two in the UK charts and was featured at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. The opera singer herself died in 2018 at the age of 85, and Spain’s King Felipe VI hailed it as “the best of all”.
