Bangkok – More than 30 people, mostly children, were killed on Thursday when a gunman opened fire at a childcare center in northeastern Thailand, Thai authorities said.

Police Major General Ashion Kraythong said the shooting took place in the early afternoon in the center of the town of Nongbua Lamphu.

He said the attacker killed 30 people before he committed suicide. He had no more details.

A spokesman for the regional public affairs office said 26 deaths had been confirmed so far – 23 children, two teachers and a police officer.

According to Thai media reports, the gunman used knives in the attack and then fled the building.

Pictures showed at least two bodies lying on the center’s floor covered in white sheets.

Several media outlets said the attacker was a former police lieutenant colonel from the area, but there was no immediate official confirmation.

The Daily News reported that after fleeing the scene of the attack, the attacker returned to his home and killed himself with his wife and child.
