Todd MacFarlane likely to step down as film director (Exclusive)

After years of suffering in the inferno of development, spawn Finds a new life. Creator Todd McFarlane has hired three new writers to rework his script for the 1997 Blumhouse-produced reboot of the live event. spawntapping the Scott Silver trio (joker), Malcolm Spellman (Captain America: New World Order), And the Matt Mixon (Yesterday it was all). McFarlane, who has been developing the gritty reboot with producer Jason Bloom since 2017, was set to debut an adaptation of his comic book with star-linked Jamie Foxx as the reborn Hellspawn Al Simmons. But in an exclusive interview with Character Book At New York Comic Con, McFarlane questioned its making spawn His first appearance in the feature film industry.

“I was on stage, ‘I’m going to write, produce, direct,’ etc. “I’ve been putting pressure on Jimmy, who’s kind of in this world. Writers want to do something different. Let’s leave it at that,” MacFarlane said. Character Book. “They don’t want to repeat – no one wants to do a $200 million special effects splendor. That’s not what spawn It is for any of us.”

Comic book writer and artist, conceived by MacFarlane as a low-cost supernatural thriller, says spawn A smaller story will remain – more joker From Avengers.

“We want to do something that’s obviously entertaining, and visually interesting, but hopefully leaves you with something when you leave,” MacFarlane said. “You could say, ‘Wow, that was a little deeper than I thought it would be. “The goal is to start a franchise.” not only spawn MacFarlane explained that the film, but “start in a franchise until we have many more films coming after it that will eventually expand spawn Universe.”

As for how MacFarlane trained hands after handing over the script to the new writers, the producer said, “Part of the conversation I have to have with them, when anyone comes on board, is to give them as much freedom as possible, right? Because what’s so fun that She says, “You have to go in and you have to do it that way.” So they’ve got some ideas that are really, I think, really compelling ideas for the movie that you might not 100% follow through with. [a specific issue of the comic book]. ”

He was asked if he would remain as a manager spawn MacFarlane replied to the film, “Here’s the cold, harsh truth. If you’re asking Todd personally, ‘Yes!'” But if you’re asking CEO Todd, now I have to be practical, and I have to say, ‘If you’re going to have all these [A-list] People jump on board and then you’re going to go to the studio and ask for a lot of money to start this thing, is everyone going to want to put it all into a first-time movie director? ”

According to MacFarlane, the answer is “no.” Instead, MacFarlane will likely hand over his directing duties to a more experienced filmmaker to bring the film star together with his notable writers.

“As a CEO, my answer would be no. I’m not investing all that money and you’re going to put a newbie in this chair. The reality is, if we get to that big moment — and I think we’ll get there — maybe I’ll have to take a step back,” MacFarlane said of output spawn. “And go, guys, I get it. There’s a lot of risk to being a newbie here.” She became the weak link at that point. My goal at this point is to get another A-list director, so the whole package – the cast, the writing, the directing – everything is an A-list. So when we go to the studios selling it, it becomes very easy to “yes” from multiple people, hopefully So we are looking for the best possible deal.”
