Ranking collectors ARTnewsThe annual Top 200 list is often avid travelers, heading to various places around the world to see – and buy – great works of art. While the pandemic shutdown in 2020 brought all of that to a standstill, this summer’s easing of travel restrictions in many countries has these collectors on the move again.

Many collectors, both based in the US and Europe, headed to the Venice Biennale – and a chorus of them reported that seeing Simone Leigh’s US pavilion installation was a highlight of the trip. (In fact, many of them are collectors of the artist’s work.)

On their travels, collectors often turn to major museum exhibits, exhibition shows, and galleries to make purchases. It’s also been known that a handful of them compete for excellent works at the big evening sale Sotheby’s and Christie’s every May and November that they have to spend millions of dollars on art.

Famous artists this year include Amanda Williams, Reggie Burroughs Hodges, Shara Hughes, Rick Lowe, Alvaro Barrington, and Eggshan Adams, whose reputation in the United States has only been enhanced by a widely acclaimed survey at the Art Institute of Chicago. Perennial favorites on the Top 200 list include Jean Dubuffet, Rashid Johnson, Cecily Brown, Elijah Quad, Von Spahn and Amoco Boavo.

Many art collectors are also sensitive to shifts in the art world, and this year, some said they focused—or in some cases continued to focus—on historically important, underappreciated artists. Among the collectors who said they bought it this time are Huggie Lee Smith, Grace Hartigan, Norman Lewis, Jawad Slim and Claude Cahoun.
