Across eight episodes so far, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law She manages to create her own meaningful stakes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, all while taking Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) into an unconventional origin story. The show played with Jane’s reluctance to be a superhero—and her ordinary daily life as a high-ranking lawyer and single woman—in some truly unexpected ways, which all culminated in an emotional context in the show’s latest episode. . The episode ended with Jane and her family and friends attending a local party, where Jane was scheduled to be celebrated with her Lawyer of the Year award. During the awards ceremony, Jane was publicly humiliated by members of the misogynistic intelligence, who began broadcasting her phone and even a sex tape of her and Josh (Trevor Salter) to the public. As a result, Jin (understandably) gets rougher, and soon the threat of the Hulk’s powers wreaks havoc and leads to the emergence of damage control. The last minute of the episode has Jane turning to the camera and breaking the fourth wall again, all while being aware of the wave of emotions she is feeling.
In a recent interview with Marvel.com, She-Hulk representatives and crew spoke about the arc culminating at that moment, with Maslany saying Jen’s response was “largely justified.”
“At first she was able to handle the matter with some confidence. [becoming She-Hulk] Maslany explained that she’s spent her entire life in anger or fear, so the transition to She-Hulk was easy. Not a bunch of violence in it. It’s clean because that’s how I learned to deal with her feelings.”
“I always wanted to remind all of us that this moment when you are so angry is very justified,” Maslani continued. “It’s only because of the external perception of that rage and how brutal it looks from the outside. naturallyShe wants to go after the man who publicly insulted her. naturally.”
Maslany also spoke about the emotion behind that story, and how he paired it with the “comic and goofy” moments from the show in a compelling way.
“To feel like you can control the way people look at you, I think that’s true,” Maslani continued. “Jane thinks she can control this thing that is ultimately out of her control. She just learned that we weave a story into very comedic and goofy moments that lead to something intense, poignant, and political he-she.”
